Elder females face unique challenges in the aging process. However, it is without question, health provider must provide quality care with dignity. Identifying where the challenge arise is the first step in addressing the challenges. The structure of the female body and requirement of care creates some unique challenges from the reproductive system and social role the females play. The social role of a female life’s is illustrated in figure 3. Figure 3 has a couple of words that stand out, which are housework, children, school, and work. Some personal hygiene activities are cleaning private areas, bathing, brushing teeth, going to the bathroom, washing clothes, and cleaning nails. Security, quality, and comfort are implemented with personal hygiene. For example, cleaning and elder female requires skills and experience with the peri area after going to the bathroom due to the female body shape. Poor personal hygiene can lead to other disease process like UTI (Urinary tract infection). Also, personal hygiene in “Dignity of Care” supports the individual’s lifestyle from the considerations of what the individual wants based on a appropriate standards of quality care. In addition, benchmarks are used to identify the individual's choices of lifestyle in environmental, hygiene, appearance, and cultural. Aging affects every individual and is inevitable, despite our valiant attempts to prevent it. The aging process beings the moment of conception however some can argue it begins at birth. The process of aging is heavily impacted by health, genetics and environmental factors. As people age we have to become accustom to the changes associated with life. The question becomes what changes happen and how? Although we cannot predict what will happen to us we can work to prevent specific things from happening by living healthier lives.
Respecting a person’s sovereignty is essential when working in the medical field. The “rules” of upholding one’s autonomy is to respect the privacy of others, to not lie, to maintain confidentiality, to obtain consent, and to advise one when needed. In today’s society with the blogs, the gossip sites and the other forms of social media, confidentiality is a thing of the past. However, for, physicians and other health professionals, they are held to a higher standard to maintain a level of ethics and confidentiality for their patients. Aging occurs in every species. Over time a change occurs on a cellular level in a person’s body, which causes degenerative effects on the brain, muscles, organs, bones, hormones, and DNA. In 1991, the book Evolutionary Biology of Aging, offered the following definition of aging: a persistent decline in the age-specific fitness components of an organism due to internal physiological deterioration.1 Aging affects the body physically and mentally. Many people dread getting older due to the numerous changes the body goes through. The geriatric population experiences many pains and is inflicted with various diseases. There are a few who are lucky enough to not get diagnosed with a life altering disease, such as Alzheimer’s, type II diabetes, high blood pressure, macular degeneration, or some form of cancer. Studies have shown that genetics play a vital role in the aging process.
My knowledge about the concept of privacy and dignity and its importance to health care and the benefit to service users has increased, however I will also be conducting more research on privacy and dignity in relation to patient care.
Confidentiality in health care is a growing concern as nurses are often faced with the challenges of reacting to question regarding patient’s progress (McGowan, 2012). Confidentiality as defined by Gregory, Raymond-Seniuk, Patrick and Stephen (2015) is the promise given to a person that his or her personal information will not be disclosed randomly if no consent has been given regardless of who is seeking such information (p.600). This paper will attempt to explore the concept of confidentiality as a sensitive issue, challenges that nurses face as they try to protect patient’s health information and some guidelines that govern protection of information and when this information can be divulged.
