Definition:
“Collaboration is a method through which both parties try to satisfy their goals by not making concessions, but coming up with a satisfactory solution – a win/win situation” (Satterlee, 2013, p. 174).
Summary:
The article “Enhancing collaboration” was written by two authors Silverstone and Thomas, who both have adequate knowledge about managing their business and always come up with incredible solutions to success. In this article, collaboration is mentioned not all productive, and different types of collaboration pose different requirements and benefit from different enablers. First, Silverstone and Thomas (2011) defined that self-organizing collaboration is held because of the discovery of shared purpose or interest among a group of previously unconnected individuals. Second, progressive collaboration occurs when an individual’s search grows into something larger as collaborators discover a shared need or passion and recruit others to do it. Third, remedial collaboration happens where there are some inefficiencies or gaps in formal structures or processes, which then requires problem solving teams, task forces… Lastly, oppositional collaboration is used for more attractive effort bargain or the growth of a distinctive identity based in opposition instead of trying to compensate for the shortcomings of a procedure. In my opinion, that was such a good idea when the authors classified collaboration that people could understand and apply each one into correct situation. They need to be clear to why they want collaboration because the cost of collaboration may be high. The more individuals involved, the greater cost of exercise in terms of directly facilitating meetings or the time spent away from their other duties. In the upside, collaboration brings people several advantages. In a collaborative process, individuals from various backgrounds come up and share different perspectives, which may cause arguments. However, conflict is considered one of the main elements of collaboration. Since there are a variety of ideas contributed, the last decision will be the most effective that the parties have all together agreed with.
