Both causes are completely different issues. The goal of the Civil Rights Movement was to overturn unjust laws that forced society to live in segregation. Before the Civil Rights Movement it was illegal before for a black man to marry a white woman. It was also illegal for private business owners to accommodate both whites and blacks in the same areas. There were separate churches, separate cemeteries, separate bathrooms, separate libraries, overall separate facilities for both blacks and whites. All of this was possible and enforced through local and state laws. Even if you wanted to, it would be illegal to allow a black person to use the water fountain on your property. If by some miracle they had survived the horrific trip, they would eventually be sold alongside cattle. Initially and after the civil war they didn't have the same freedom afforded to all other citizens of the United States through the Bill of Rights. Basically they were not considered people but more of that of property. They were beaten and whipped for simple mistakes or at whim of their owner. Constantly they were overworked, underfed, uneducated and underrepresent. For them to escape they had to go through drastic measure such as mailing themselves in packages or using the Underground Railroad. Using the Underground Railroad was not as easy as our textbooks made it sound and those who were caught running or helping runaway slaves would be severely punished and sometimes killed. Finally, before the Civil Rights Movement they were able to obtain segregation. Although Segregation was a big improvement it was still terrible, but at a minimum both black men and women could have low paying jobs and could have their own homes. Black people were still being hung, beaten, raped, et cetera. Through the Civil Rights Movement conditions improved but most would argue that they are still
