Also some sport can be adapted ti fit a disabled person better, not to give them an advantage but to put it on a even ground for others who are not disabled. This keeps the game balanced and give opportunities for disabled athletes. To defended my point on assisting products I will explain examples so,for example, as said in the paragraph above disabled athletes can purchase modified wheel chair to even the gap between them and non-disabled athletes. Examples of modifications are being made of "light metals, allowing athletes to move quickly and easily. Also, the wheels on the chairs are tilted at an angle. This gives them balance for quick, sharp turns and rugged play." ,another is "Racing chairs [which] are long and sleek to reduce drag. A single front wheel is guided by a steering mechanism [that] gives extra stability as athletes lean their weight forward." These quotes from "Super Chairs"show that modifications can give the disabled athletes a better chance at competing with other athletes who are not disabled. …show more content…
An example being ice sled hockey, in ice sled hockey "Players sit on steel-tube sleds that ride on skate blades, and two shortened hockey sticks to move the puck and their sleds across the ice. They wear uniforms and follows rules similar to those of ice hockey." So ice sled hockey helps disabled athletes by removing the need of one's legs an using a sled to move around on the field. What comes into one’s mind when they are asked to consider physical disabilities? Pity and embarrassment, or hope and encouragement? Perhaps a mix between the two contrasting emotions? The average, able-bodied person must have a different perspective than a handicapped person, on the quality of life of a physically disabled person. Nancy Mairs, Andre Dubus, and Harriet McBryde Johnson are three authors who shared their experiences as physically handicapped adults. Although the three authors wrote different pieces, all three essays demonstrate the frustrations, struggles, contemplations, and triumphs from a disabled person’s point of view and are aimed at a reader with no physical disability.

The Special Olympics date back all the way to the year 1968. Many see these Games as a time to honor someone who is able to “overcome” a task, but author William Peace sees this as an insulting portrayal of people with disabilities. Peace is a multidisciplinary school teacher and scholar that uses a wheel chair and writes about the science behind disabilities and handicaps. As a physically handicapped individual, Peace is able to observe a negative portrayal of disabled persons. In his article titled, “Slippery Slopes: Media, Disability, and Adaptive Sports,” William Peace offers his own personal insight, utilizes several statistics regarding handicaps, as well as numerous rhetorical appeals in order to communicate to the “common man”

There seems to be few reasons as to why disabled athletes should not able to participate in sports competitions with able-bodied athletes. Recently the U.S. Department of Education issued a ‘landmark moment’ for disabled student athletes. These new guidelines instilled got rid of the previously vague policy and offers more specifics as to how school can include students with disabilities in sports programs (Williams, 2013). These new guidelines can in a sense deliver what Title IX did for women in sports to these disabled athletes. These guidelines state that schools have to make reasonable modifications for students with disabilities who are otherwise qualified to play on mainstream teams a...
many sports an athlete have to work hard to become good in the sport they play. If the player is skilled enough he or she can get drafted to play in a professional team and get paid for it. Wheelchair basketball is no different from any other sport. The only exception is that the sport is intended for people with leg disabilities however the benefits remain true. Wheelchair basketball incorporates wheelchair as the only option players can move, thus creating fairness to all players. If it had not been for wheelchairs the disabled would not be able to play the sport and potentially get paid for it. Enthaising the importance of technology and how it affects lives. Overall, technology gives people with disabilities new opportunities for employment.
The Paralympics is a non-profit organization involving athletes with a range of physical disabilities. The Paralympics first started in 1952 in Stoke Mandeville, Great Britain with only two countries participating and 130 athletes. Recently in Sochi, Russia they were forty four countries with 502 athletes. With the broad range of disabilities that Paralympic athletes have, there are several sections in which the athletes engage. The acceptable disabilities are broken down into ten categories. The categories are impaired passive range of movement, impaired muscle power, leg length difference, athetosis, hypertonia, ataxia, athetosis, short stature, vision impairment and intellectual impairment. These categories are then further broken down into divisions, which vary from sport to sport. Even though, Paralympic sports have progressed over time they are still not considered in equality compared to the Olympics due to their lack of funding and broadcasting.
The Paralympic Games is an international competition including participants with a variety of physical and intellectual disabilities. These disabilities include mobility disabilities, blindness, cerebral palsy, and amputations. The Paralympics give a person with disabilities the chance to demonstrate his or her abilities. Not only do the Paralympics benefit disabled people, but also non-disabled people who are observing. In my opinion, the Paralympics are a way for a disabled person to overcome the stereotype that he or she has been defined as. These Games are an opportunity for non-disabled people to see the participants as people and not as disabilities. The first Paralympic Games are dated to 1948, but there were clubs in existence for athletes with disabilities prior to the Paralympics. The idea of the Paralympics is to give people with disabilities a place where they can thrive. Occasionally disabled athletes would compete in the Olympics, but since the Paralympics formed these athletes have a more suitable place to compete.
