There are many aspects and procedures in crime scene investigation that are very essential in each case that is presented. Evidence collection, preservation, documentation and the role Digital Image Capture and Processing are important keys in any investigation. There are protocols that must be followed to protect the integrity of the evidence that is collected. In many instances, cases are lost due to contamination and improperly collecting evidence. To ensure that these steps are taken when collecting evidence, photographs must be taken and documented. These steps are known as Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). SOP is step-by-step instruction that each agency has to help ensure that the collection process is done correctly. Evidence that is collected can be known as physical evidence or biological evidence. Physical evidence comes from a non living origin found at a crime scene that connects to the crime. Biological evidence originates from a living being. A chain of custody must be kept at all times. Chain of custody is a legal context that refer to the chronological documentation that shows the seizure, custody, control, transfer, analysis and disposition of all evidence. This is one of many forms of documentation that is used when collecting evidence.
When reporting to a crime seen it is imperative that there is no eating, drinking or smoking taking place. To prevent this from occurring a command post should be designated. To document the times of everyone who enters and exits the crime scene, a Crime Scene Log must be created. Photograph, videos and sketches should be taken of the crime scene to demonstrate and give a visual of the crime scene. However, all evidence is not collected the same.
