Words can be both an enemy and an ally. At times, words can leave an irreparable wound and at other times they can deeply inspire. Dick and Rick Hoyt’s story does the latter. Dick pushes his disabled son, Rick, in hundreds of races because he desires for his son to feel blithe and abled.

However, what makes this an especially endearing human interest story is the fact that both the father and son are simultaneously helping each other. While the father is busy trying to fulfill his son’s dreams, his son is subconsciously saving his father’s life. A doctor tells Dick that had he not ran all those races that he “probably would [have] died 15 years ago” because one of his arteries is 95% clogged. For example, when Rick wanted to run a charity run, Dick, who described himself as a porker, put in extra effort so that he could push his son through the race and fulfill Rick’s wish. Following the race Dick describes feeling handicapped for two weeks. However, this was a turning point for him and after this race he started to regularly run marathons and races for his son.
