There are many ways to show theme in a book. Authors uses dialouge, character, setting, and/or plot. Sometimes they use two or more in their books. J.R.R. Tolkein uses character and dialouge in his book, The Hobbit or There And Back Again, to show that the small, but quite can do unexpecting things.

It is easy to see the theme in Tolkein's book through the eyes of Bilbo Baggins, the “author” of the book. At the beginning, Gandalf visits Bilbo Baggins, who is a quite hobbit that doesn't like adventures. The next day Bilbo runs out of Bag End because he is going to be late for an adventure. “To the end of his days Bilbo could never remember how he found himself outside, without a hat, a walking-stick, or any money, or anything …show more content…

Bilbo again proves that just because he is small and quite that he can't do the unexpected. He freed his friends from the giant spiders in the Mirkwood Forest. “The spider lay dead beside [Bilbo], and his sword was stained black. Somehow the killing of the giant spider without the help of the wizard or the dwarves or of anyone else, made a great difference to Mr. Baggins. He felt a different person, and much fiercer and bolder in spite of an empty stomach, as he wiped his sword on the grass and put it back into its sheath.” (Chapter VIII, page 170, paragraph 1). Thorin was seperated from the other dwarves when they were captured by the woodland elves. Thankfully Bilbo wasn't stuck in cell, so he went back and forth being a messenger for Thorin and the dwarves. “So it was that Bilbo was able to take secretly Thorin's message to each of the other imprisoned dwarves, …show more content…

After escaping the goblins, Gandalf did a head count and noticed Bilbo was missing. He got angry. After the dwarves argued about what happened to their burglar. Bilbo took the ring, which he found in Gollum's cave, off and was standing in the middle of the dwarves. Gandalf told the dwarves that there was more to Bilbo than they thought. “ 'What did I tell you?' said Gandalf laughing. 'Mr. Baggins has more about him than you guess.' ” (Chapter VI, page 104, paragraph 3). Riding barrels is never fun, but that was how Bilbo and the dwarves escaped the woodland elves. Thorin says that Gandalf was right about Bilbo. Gandalf had left the Company at the beginning of the Mirkwood Forest, so it was just Bilbo and the dwarves. “ 'Upon my word!' said Thorin, when Bilbo whispered to him to come out and join his friends, 'Gandalf spoke true, as usual! A pretty fine burglar you make, it seems, when the time comes. I am sure we are all for ever at your service, whatever happens after this. But what comes next?' ” (Chapter IX, page 195, paragraph 1). After the Battle of the Five Armies (the battle is called this because there were five armies fighting: Dwarves. Men. Orcs. Goblins. Elves.), Thorin is dying because of wounds he got from Azog the Defiler, and he makes amends with Bilbo. Bilbo doesn't understand why Thorin calls him a friend, so Thorin explains why. “ 'No!' said Thorin.
