Definition
Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic medical condition that affects millions of people. This chronic condition is associated with high levels of glucose in the blood. As a newly diagnosed patient it is crucial to be aware how our bodies react to food consumption in regards to how insulin is produced to fully understand the concept of insulin production by the pancreas.
Breakdown
Usually after food consumption the pancreas reacts by producing insulin to break down carbohydrates. When an individual is diagnosed with diabetes, insulin either becomes absent or is insufficiently produced. Diabetes is a metabolic disease that result from these defects.
Types
There are two specific types of diabetes. Type 1 and Type 2. There are significant differences between the two, but both have similar symptoms and management. …show more content…

This type of diabetes is caused by the pancreas not producing enough insulin, in result, they need to be insulin dependent.
Type 2 is adult onset diabetes. This type is where instead of being insulin dependent, they are insulin resistant. This type does not require insulin injections, but needs a complete tracking record of blood sugar levels before and after food consumption. A doctor usually will prescribe a glucose meter that does require the patient to prick their finger and collect their blood to analyze blood sugar levels. From here the patient must document their levels in their diabetes tracker.
Nutrition
A patient diagnosed with diabetes will experience symptoms associated with weight gain or weight loss. In order to control sugar levels, healthy nutrition is crucial.
