Type 1 Diabetes

By Milun Ball

Introduction of the Medical Condition:

Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong auto-immune condition in which the body can't control the

amount of glucose in the blood. This is because the body’s immune system is activated to

destroy the insulin producing cells in the pancreas.

It is commonly diagnosed in childhood but can arise at any age and is not currently

preventable. The causes of the disease are not fully understood, but scientists are

convinced that a person’s genes play a role, as well as a variety of environmental factors.

Type 1 diabetes is controlled with insulin injections several times a day or the use of an

insulin pump. One can still live an enjoyable life by learning about the

condition and effectively managing it. While lifestyle choices don’t cause type 1 diabetes,

the choices people with the condition make can minimise many of the complications

associated with diabetes.

How Exercise Can Benefit The Condition:

The many benefits of exercise include helping to maintain or lose weight, reduce

blood pressure and cholesterol, reduce stress and tension, improve sleep, mood, mental

activity, and achieve target blood glucose levels.

Relevant Exercise Assessments:

Before starting an exercise program your client must try and get good blood glucose

control and be prepared to test their blood glucose regularly.

They should see their doctor to check heart risk factors, eyesight, feet and kidneys. And to

develop an exercise plan by discussing what type, intensity, frequency, and duration would

suit them as well as changes in diet and insulin they may need.

They need to understand that they can enter a hypoglycemic state...

activity have on the body, people with type 1 diabetes who tend to experience exercise

related hypoglycemia are likely to be better off by performing their resistance exercise

before cardio; doing so may reduce declines in blood glucose levels during later aerobic

exercise.

Also, for some, performing the resistance component of their workout first might

lower the requirement for carbohydrate supplementation during exercise. But of course

for those who experience exercise related hyperglycemia it would be suggested to perform

aerobic exercise first.

As for the type of exercises, clients should try to stay away from high intensity training and

heavy, vigorous weight lifting - at least at first. This is mostly due to concerns of diabetic

peripheral neuropathy which results in loss of sensation and position awareness of the

feet.
