The Deviance of Atheism Sociologically, deviance is defined as actions or behaviors that violate both formal and informal rules of social norms. I chose to address the deviance of atheist belief; the belief of heterosexual cis gendered middle class atheist males in America is incredibly deviant according to patriarchal historical pretense. Atheism is defined as “the doctrine that there is no deity” (Merriam-Webster). Heterosexual cis gendered middle class atheist males are deviant from the generationally passed down faith of ancestors and the mythologies that built empires across the globe. America, being largely Christian, has its deepest roots in the patriarchal truth of male sovereignty. Women still get paid a percentage to the dollar of their male counterparts. Not to make this specifically a Christian point, all three of the major world religions are influenced by archaic definitions of sexuality and sexism.
