An individual may have several different characteristics, however it is Emmaline’s determination which helps her pursue the quest to save Tommy. While on the travel to London, the location of the master sweep containing her brother, Emmaline forces herself to take a few days worth of wagon rides alone through harsh conditions. Although she is able to receive sleep during the night, Emmaline is “awakened a number of times by harsh coughing and the shrill cries,” (pg 133”), leaving her tired. The fact Emmaline has enough for a coach, which would make her voyage more relaxing, but makes the choice to opt for a cheaper option to preserve enough money in hopes to buy her brother back shows her determination. Emmaline shows her ability to observe and learn from previous experiences when approaching sweeps on the street, “ Emmaline stepped in front of him, holding out a raisin tart. She’d learned that food was the only way to get close to a climbing boy.” Being older and stronger than the sweeps, Emmaline could have grabbed the climbing boys and forced the answer out of them. Had she not talked to the sweeps, she would not have found out about Tommy’s location, yet in conversing with them, she ran the thin line of being noticed by older sweeps, the prodders, and being reported to the master sweep. Had the Master sweep been Tommy’s, he could have moved streets or prevented Emmaline from finding her brother. Not only does Emmaline use her smarts looking for Tommy, she also makes use of it at the Thorn House. When Master Thorn discovers that Emmaline can read, “ I know you can read, and I’d like to hear you today.’ “ he forms a special bond with Emmaline. If Emmaline hadn’t been able to read, it would have been much harder to from her unique bond with Master Thorn and consequently it would be considerably more difficult to support Tommy and herself after fleeing from Brandy Jack. Knowing Master Eugene does not like his servants being able to read, Emmaline could have easily been thrown out to the streets by him. It is often the case that there is a game played by the characters, within the game or riddle presented in the scene. Furthermore, through analysis of the scenes involving Mr. Elton’s riddle, the word game at Donwell Abbey and the conundrum at Box Hill, it can be argued the games and riddles are representative of the mental games played by the characters.

Rationality and sensibility are essential parts of human’s life. The explanation of rationality in the dictionary is “based on clear, practical, or scientific reasons; sensible and able to make decisions based on intelligent thinking rather than on emotion ”. And the explanation of sensibility is “an acute perception of or responsiveness toward something, such as the emotions of another ”. People always want to separate rationality and sensibility into two opposite things, even the dictionary says that rationality is “intelligent thinking rather than on emotion”. In the book Sense and Sensibility, each of the two female main characters, Elinor and Marianne, stand for rationality and sensibility, but both of them pass a difficult time when they being pure rationality or sensibility. There is an idiom in China called “things will develop in the opposites direction when they become extreme”, and this is exactly what should think about how to balance two consciousness. Being excessively rational or exceeding sensible cannot make things happen just as you want it will be. Finding a “balance” between them is the correct way to live as Jane Austen suggest in the book. Problems would happen while the “scale” of consciousness being amesiality, either the rational side or the sensible one. Excessively sensible makes people show everything exterior, including their weakness. But being exceeding rational cannot make the thing totally different, it just let people hide everything internal. According to these, a fulcrum between these two extreme is necessary.
Emma's personality is largely shaped by the nature of her upbringing. Emma had no motherly figure guiding her as she grew up, due to the fact that her mother passed away at a young age, and her governess, Miss Taylor, became her best friend instead of an authority over her.
