The author of This Dark Endeavor is Kenneth Oppel and the ever-occurring theme throughout the book is the effects of determination and jealousy. Kenneth Oppel is a writer from Canada who tells the story of the two Frankenstein brothers, Victor and Konrad in Geneva, Switzerland. He wanted this book to serve as the prelude to the classic story of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The novel centers the story around Victor Frankenstein and his role in saving his twin Konrad Frankenstein. I thoroughly enjoyed reading This Dark Endeavor because it has elements of fantasy, mythology, magic, and mystery all tied into one book. Victor Frankenstein is a very curious sixteen year old boy, who lives with his family in the Château Frankenstein in Geneva Switzerland. Elizabeth falls and she catches herself on a bookshelf, but her hand knocks down a row of books revealing the passage to the Dark Library. On page 12 it describes how the passage opens up, “The bookshelf behind her had swung inward on invisible hinges, revealing a narrow opening.” An ancestor of the family known as Wilhelm Frankenstein built the Dark Library that holds ancient and rare books about alchemy. The books found in the Dark Library draw Victor into the library more and more. This sparked interest makes his father worried and he forbids visiting the library. Konrad becomes sick and the doctors who come to their estate to help him cannot cure him of his sickness. Dr. Muranu is the only doctor who really helps Konrad return to his normal state of being
