Desperation sea by Rebecca Zissou explains about african teens trying to cross the medeteranian sea. These young men are trying to escape war to go to a better place. This journey was dangerous because they didn't have food and drinks so they could've obviously died. Another reason why it was dangerous was because there ship or boat, was sinking and they were in danger to die. The men luckly survived and were able to make it to dry land in a place were they got food, shelter and medical attention .
The author Linda Sue Park's book, A Long Walk to Water, tells a story of a boy named Salva who was a lost boy in the Second Sudanese civil war in 1980. Salva managed to survive the war along the way without his family and survived on his own following ways to go on in life no matter what bad situation he was in.
The Middle Passage was a voyage that brought enslaved Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to North America and the West Indies. Olaudah Equiano was born around year 1745 in Guinea which is now Nigeria. He was sold into slavery while he was still a child and he worked in America and in the West Indies. He bought his own freedom and he stayed in England. He described his life as a slave in the Middle Passage as terrible. He was whipped after he refused his masters who offered him eatables. He said he wasn't hungry, because of the bad smell on the ship cause of diseases and sick slaves. He saw masters whipping slaves if they didn't obey them. And as for "The Amistad", slaves had taken revenge and started killing their white masters from the La Amistad ship. They were whipped and they suffered a lot. And were all chained together, so no one can escape. They don't have much air going on the ship for there was a lot of slaves and there is no much air to breath for all of them, they were all on the low deck of the ship. The dreadful Middle Passage had caused all the slaves suffered to death.
The film The Searchers directed by John Ford, featured actor John Wayne. The setting of the film takes place in 1868 in the frontier of Texas. The main character, Ethan Edwards was an ex-confederate soldier, who had return home from the war. Even though the probability of dying is low, taking a risk that could mean losing a life is not worth it. Therefore, people need to be knowledgeable about the activities that they are going partake in. For example, In “To build a Fire,” a man went on an expedition to map out a pathway and he went all alone, along with his dog. This man did not learn enough about his expedition until he got himself involved in the life or death situation. “That man from Sulphur Creek had spoken the truth when telling how cold it sometimes got in the country. And he had laughed at the time!” Consequently, the man had died on this journey, for making decisions that were risky. Another example of getting involved in a life-or-death situation is volunteering to go to war. Although these people want to protect their country, they need to know that there is a risk involved in going to war. Seabiscuit by Laura Hillenbrand is a novel that is written with many riveting depictions of the life of a racing horse and its jockey. Throughout the novel, the author does an excellent job at describing the hardships of a person, and animal, while also displaying that hardwork is worth the incredible outcomes of the long and dreadful journey. The extreme measures that a jockey will, and does take to become something in the eye of the racing industry shows that a person's audacity and indefatigable efforts can lead them to the win of their life. The moods of becoming a jockey and actually making it in the industry differ tremendously. However, they seem to be the same in that the jockey and the horse never stop trying to be the best that
On this voyage, the conditions were horrifying, hopeless, brutal and wretched, some of the words from Olaudah. The high mortality rates were caused by the disease infested rooms. The temperatures were unbearable, hot and covered with blood and mucus. The African Americans were deprived of food, healthcare and neglected proper treatments. Due to the overcrowded conditions, this caused the diseases which killed many passengers. It’s saddening when Olaudah says that, “Sleep was the only temporary refuge.” The life on the boats were so horrible that some preferred death than to their gruesome future.
“The Found Boat” by Alice Munro is a story about five teenagers that learn to explore and have a sense of freedom after finding a boat washed ashore after a flood. The boat becomes a common ground used between the characters to become closer friends and explore things in the world around them. This boat that they find gives these kids a new found form of freedom and they embrace that.
The middle passage was a sea journey by slave ships from West Africa to the West Indies and Americas from 1601-1857 (University). The first successful African author, Olaudah Equiano (Donaldson) portrays the vivid details and personalizes these destructive forces of slave trading during the middle passage. In his narrative, Equiano influenced British abolitionists, as well as European slave masters, and convicted them of their wrongdoing. Slave trading during the middle passage was the most destructive thing to happen within the African culture because of the harsh physical and psychological effects, inhumane treatment, and dehumanization of slaves.

One storyline is about a young eleven year old girl named Nya who is apart of the Nuer tribe and lives in Sudan. Nya lives the life of a young Sudanese girls because they collect water for their family every day. The other storyline is about an eleven year old boy named Salva who is in the Dinka tribe and lives in Sudan, but travels throughout many countries and states in his life. Salva’s story line shows how getting attacked by rebels and escaping from civil war changed his and many others’ lives. Both characters face many changes throughout the story. Linda Sue Park wants readers to know to accept change for good or bad.

Jennifer Egan’s Safari is a short story that highlights the different relationships in a family with a complicated background. Rolph and Charlie come from a divorced household and join their father, Lou, and his new girlfriend, Mindy, on an African safari. As the events of the trip unfold, Lou’s children experience a coming of age in which they lose the innocence they once possessed. The significant impact of family dynamic on children’s transition into adulthood is presented in Safari. Jennifer Egan uses Mindy’s structural classifications of Charlie and Rolph to demonstrate how Lou and Mindy’s relationship hinders the maturation of the two kids.
