From Grass to Turf There is no other place like the football field, and as a five year marching band veteran, I have seen many. They come in all sorts of sounds, feels, and conditions, but there are two individual fields that I hold near and dear to my heart. I have spent many hours on the practice field, at school, and home field, at UTM. Over the course of my years I have bled, cried tears of joy, and sweat gallons upon gallons. These two places have had the biggest effect on me as a person. The practice field is hell some say; it is a barren wasteland of lost motivation, hopes, and dreams. I have spent over 200 hours in the heat, cold, and rain. The field itself is worn down due to the many years of people learning their drill. Because of its location, whenever school lets out, the entire student body can see you putting it all out there to be the best you can be. The sounds of obnoxious playing, the car horns of passer-byers, and “chitter chatter” fill the area. The field is not friendly either, and has large …show more content…

The soft turf and lack of holes makes it an excellent place to march on, but the turf, nicknamed “rat poop,” gets in your shoes and can make it very uncomfortable. The atmosphere of the stadium is much more inviting. The crowd cheers as the band plays the fight song and you realize that all the hard work that you put in was well worth it. The rough part about being at the home field is the seats. When we are not on the field pleasing the crowd, we are in the stands playing all the popular hits that you are accustomed to hearing. After what seems like hours, we finally make our way down to the outside of the stadium to warm up for our beloved halftime show. This is the best part about the home field; as we warm up, the audience gets a sneak peak of what is in store for them in just a few more minutes.
