In no other place does the beauty of the earth strike me with such intensity as it does in the little town of Potosi, Wisconsin. With its modest six hundred eighty-five residents, the miles of farmland stretching through Potosi seem desolately quiet. On my many visits as a little girl, however, I learned that the town is far from empty. In place of people, there are dense, forested slopes and valleys, cold rivers, and tall grasses undulating in an ocean of prairie. Where the air lacks a conglomerate of human voices and humming car engines, there is immense open sky. There are lightning storms intensified by the smoldering reds and oranges of a sunset and stars that pierce the dark with their gentle illumination. However, as much as this knowledge amazes me, the environmental aspect of life science has left me concerned and disillusioned. According to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy, only 2.8% of total world energy consumption comes from renewable sources. Based on current energy use and levels of proven reserves, experts predict that the global supply of fossil fuels will expire within the next few centuries. In the face of this impending crisis, I feel that my generation must make a large-scale investment in the utilization of renewable energy and work for the preservation of our planet’s resources. In the interest of my future family, my country, and for every rising leader of our world, I am strongly moved by the importance of this issue. The most important part of my senior year has been the opportunity to make a real contribution to the search for an energy solution. I am currently interning in the Aerospace Transportation and Advanced Systems department at Georgia Tech Research Institute.
