Evan Jensen English 103 Professor Nezafati April 20 2014 Riding my Suzuki DR650 is not just my transportation, but it has become an extension of me and has taken me on numerous more meaningful adventures than I could possibly count. The experience of riding can be summed up in two phrases: exhilarating bliss and artificial nirvana. I leave the warm comforts of my house donning my riding jacket adorned with black and white 600 denier polyester, trimmed with high visibility yellow adding a touch of color to an otherwise serious jacket, black leather gloves with carbon fiber knuckles that seem to mesmerize anyone who even so much as glances at them, and my black, semi-aggressive, some would say foreign, others would say alien looking helmet. …show more content…

Reaching 25 miles per hour I shift up into 2nd gear, being careful to kick it hard enough to make it past neutral where upon shifting into would cause the bike to rev up and let out a high roar all motorcyclists consider embarrassing. Turning right onto the main road I accelerate out of the corner, the G-forces pushing me down, so I lean the bike to an easy 45 degrees. During that short amount of time you forget everything going on around you and focus on the line you have chose and how you are going to get there. Back onto a straightaway I accelerate like there’s no tomorrow, the wind roaring past me, pushing my head back, creating pressure on my entire upper body only counteracted by tucking in or leaning forward. Wide open throttle, I begin to wonder “How fast could I go? How long would it take me? Is there a cop watching? How fast could I get in fourth gear alone?”. Almost like waking up from a trance I regain my consciousness of my situation and close the throttle to get back to the Speed Limit. It is now apparent to me how bad wind chill is in the early mornings. The mesh in my jacket lets air rush through, causing goosebumps in select areas, all the while being combated by the sun beating down on my mostly black gear and the heat radiating off of the exhaust pipes right next to my right ankle. Many aromas wage war on
Needless to say, that experience has changed over time. It began from a simplistic design in 1904 as a motorized bike. However, as time progressed it brought about the introduction of the biker gang era. These were the bad asses image riding their heavy bikes down the highway, rebels who refused to give in to society’s pressures. It was the time of the Hell’s Angels, with their patches, long hair, and untidy beards that became the symbol of freedom on the road. They created the mantra of the bad ass dude on a bad ass American bike and no one was gonna tell him what to
There is no doubt that automobile plays an inevitable role in the world’s history, especially in the history of America. Both Kline and Pinch and Flink are on the problem of automobile, but they certainly have various focus. In Three stages of American automobile consciousness written by Flink, it divides the auto history into three stages and mainly argues about the history or the development of automobile industry in America, which is written in a big picture. On the other hand, Kine and Pinch tend to discuss the connection between rural area and automobile, also how gender get involved in the social construction after cars are brought to the America.
Here starts the tale of how a (LEGEND) came to be. In 1903 William Harley along with Arthur and Walter Davidson of Milwaukee,WI began experimenting with an internal combustion engine in a small wooden shed, amazingly the shed doesn’t burn down and the motorcycle that was built in it goes over 100,000 miles under 5 owners. And that was just the beginning, soon after that first bike being built; it began to happen. A cheap reliable form of transportation was needed in the country. Henry Ford’s automobiles were a little expensive for the average family. So a niche opens up for the motorcycle. Though there was no cutting- edge technology in their design, it worked. The trio had just brought a single cylinder engine (based on a DeDion design) and tube type bicycle frame together. Painted in gloss black, that first machine was admired by friends and family - now it gets interesting.
Millions of people all over the United States choose motorcycles over automobiles for the thrill, speed, and high performance capabilities. On the other hand, motorcycles are not at all the safest way of transportation. Motorcycles do not provide the passenger with the outer protection that cars provide, therefore, when one crashes, the results are usually much more serious. Injuries to the head are responsible for 76% of fatalities when dealing with motorcycle crashes many of which could have been prevented had the rider been wearing a helmet. For this reason, many states have adopted the motorcycle helmet law. The law states that every passengers must wear a helmet at all times when riding on a motorcycle. This law has created a great deal of controversy. One side supports the law, believing that it protects motorcyclists from danger and saves the economy a great deal of money. The other side argues that the law is unconstitutional and it violates our right to freedom. However, statistics show overwhelming support in favor of the motorcycle helmet law. Although wearing helmets cannot prevent motorcycle crashes, they can greatly reduce the number of deaths caused by head injury as well as lowering taxes, insurance rates, and health care costs. Therefore, the helmet law should be put into effect in every state across the United States.
...es how powerful of a symbol it has become. You wouldn’t consider the fact that someone drives a Honda Accord a defining characteristic of his or her identity but somehow that changes when it becomes a Harley Davidson Heritage Softtail. "Four wheels move the body two wheels move the sole" (Harley Davidson Ad/ 1992). It becomes clear that the motorcycle is much more than a vehicle; it is a manifestation of American values. When you break it down nothing seems more American that freedom, and brotherhood. Film has fully capitalized on these characteristics helping make the motorcycle a powerful image that has had a defining impact on American culture.
My car slows as it approaches a stoplight. I take this opportunity to allow my mind to become engulfed with my surroundings: the bright fierce red of the traffic light, the brilliant blue sky with its specs clouds, and the mass of hurried people. The four corners of the intersection are filled with people who are preoccupied with their fast-paced lives to notice the little things, such as animals and anxious cars awaiting the traffic light. My thoughts vigorously put all of the information that my mind has gathered from the intersection to order.
Driving defensively is key to avoiding accidents. This refers to anticipating hazards and being prepared for them, or driving and expecting the worst. When I was practicing my driving, my dad told me, “When you feel like another driver is going to make a bad move, assume that they will.” Just because it’s wrong for that other driver to cut you off doesn’t mean they won’t do it, so always plan for the worst of things. The main takeaways of defensive driving are:
Truck driving is a difficult job which requires great responsibility of transferring the goods from one place to other far place with proper safety. Genuine CDL training is required by every aspiring truck driver to attain essential skills as a professional driver. These training programs are meant not only help the students learn about the possible ways to handle and manage their trucks in most adverse traffic and weather conditions, but also, this training helps them to learn how to prevent any major loss of the goods during the transference.
Driving to work in your car you see traffic starting to back up which is not good, because you’re already running a little behind. A sign reads “left lane open, only.” Slowly making your way along you see the cause; An accident. Four cars piled up, and there are numerous emergency vehicles present. It looks bad. Finally breaking through, you make it in to work to turn on the news to find out the accident was caused by a driver texting on their cell phone. Two fatalities and three were rushed to the hospital under serious conditions. Unfortunately, this depiction occurs more than often you may see or hear and needs to be stopped. Mobile device use while operating a motor vehicle should be made illegal. It should be categorized with driving under
Harley-Davidson, Inc. has a long-standing culture of relationship nurturing with its customers – of association with its customers on personal levels. Owing to this, customers look at Harley-Davidson as not only a company, but as also a family to whom they owe their loyalty. Harley-Davidson is an example of a company which has a loyal (brand) following and its customers aid in future sales via marketing based on the consumer. The company has been doing business since 1903; according to its website, “Four young men experimented with internal combustion in a tiny wooden shed. Not only did the shed not burn, but the motorcycle they built went on to serve over 100,000 miles” (Harley Davidson, n.d., p.1). William S. Harley in 1901 came up with a blueprint of a motor for fitting a bicycle. Arthur Davidson later joined him, and they then built the 1st Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
In almost every vehicle on the road, people are either talking on the phone, texting, or talking to someone. When turning the corner, beware of, not just the red light, but the driver who very well may not stop. Anything someone does besides driving that does not pertain to driving is a driving distraction. No one can any longer just take a relaxing Sunday afternoon drive without their phone. Giving or receiving texts has become a part of driving. By all means, stay in touch!
Harley Davidson purpose is to fulfill dreams of personal freedom (www.harley-davidson.com). Customers are able to enjoy the freedom of the road where they are able to feel the thrill and excitement of riding a motorcycle. This allows customers to be their self and experience life to the fullest.
Another argument against wearing a motorcycle helmet is that some riders insist that wearing a helmet limits vision and hearing, and endangers the rider. Nevertheless, a 1994 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) study concluded just the opposite. The results of the study indicate that wearing a helmet while riding neither increases nor decreases the rider’s ability t...
Cuts, bruises and even broken bones will heal, but damage to your brain can last a lifetime. You can prevent possible injuries from unforeseen disasters such as smacking the street, sidewalk, curb, a car, tree or anything else around you by using safety precautions. In some cases, we are required to use safety measures, while in others we are merely advised. For instance, while driving an automobile, the law requires for all occupants in the vehicle to wear safety belts. The reason for this law is because without using such cautiousness, fatal accidents would be more frequent. In the same respects, safety should be required for bicycle and motorcycle riders. Various injuries from an accident can be prevented with the correct use of a helmet. The United States does not have any federal laws requiring bicycle helmets to be worn (“Bicycle Helmet Laws”). States and localities began adopting laws in 1987, but there is no formal central registry for helmets (“Bicycle Helmet Laws”). A total of twenty states have adopted laws, including the District of Columbia as a "state", and at least 135 local laws (“Bicycle Helmet Laws”). Seventeen states have no state or local helmet laws at all (“Bicycle Helmet Laws”). According to The Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, the state laws that require cyclists to wear helmets only end at the ages between fifteen and eighteen years old. As a result, children are required to wear a helmet, but it is not mandatory for adults to use these preventive measures, it is merely advised. Since accidents are inevitable, it is impossible to predict the outcome of a tragedy. Therefore, the law should include statutes that require all cyclists, regardless o...
I lived with my father for my entire life, but due to his work I did not spend much time with him. My father worked at a different city; and thus he comes home only a few times a month. My father is a mechanic. He works at a company that is distant from our home. This was due to the company being the only one and the first where cars were being assembled in Ethiopia. Sometimes on the weekends I used to go to his work place. He would give me a trip of the place; the station was filled with vehicles, trucks, and motorcycles. It was separated by sections. In each section there were only one type of vehicle and the assembly process was shown step by step. From a fuse to large engine of the car, components were getting attached.
