Clothes was always my specialty. I guess that’s why I believe in playing dress up. I love how certain colors goes perfectly together and other colors could be a major fashion statement. That could also explain my shopping addiction. That fuzzy feeling of getting an 20%, 30%, or 60% email from your favorite stores screaming that it is a huge sale. I craved clothes almost like it was a drug addiction. I just had to have the latest style of my fashion, did you catch that? Of my fashion, I wasn’t interested in what everybody else had; I wanted to have my own individual style, that was almost hard to copy. My sister and I used to find the most creative blankets in the house I would usually get the Micky Mouse blanket with little to no holes, and Kayla would get the big blue fuzzy blanket with holes that were big enough to put our bodies through. We used to lay them out and roll our bodies up into them and act like the blankets were our prom dresses. You may think this is a little silly, but to me it was like the living room was the runway, and my mom and grandma were the spectators. It was my first time walking in heels and having my little toes balled up in the front of the heel, tripping and tumbling over everything I encountered. The 1920’s was an era of dramatic political and cultural change, where many Americans lived in cities rather than farms. Many inventors came to be noticed as new cars were invented and as music entered the entertainment industry. A new style of music was invented mainly in the African American community, creating the Harlem Renaissance; which was an evolution of music and entertainment in Harlem, New York City. The women of America began to evolve in the 1920s, adding new styles to our fashion industry and changing the way women dress, act, and are portrayed in society for generations. I had just broken my glasses. It was December and my elementary school class would be taking us to the most recognized Ballet, The Nutcracker. Because our seats were pretty far from the stage, I found it very difficult to see. Embarrassed, I walked and spoke to my teacher, she of course understood my situation and arranged for me and a friend to sit in the front row. Breathtaking was the experience, gazing at the beautiful ballerinas in their intricate costumes and tutus, dancing on their pointes, making jetès and èchappès, I remained extremely captivated throughout the whole performance. I gained something more than the experience however, I developed a dream that turned into a goal. Throughout history, there were many things that influenced fashion and the ideal body image of the time. Things such as politics, and changes in social roles were some things that had an influence on the fashion of the day. One particular shocking thing that had influenced on the fashion around the 1800s were sickness and diseases. Not only were diseases and sickness caused by different fashion trends, but it set the tone for certain ideal body images and also influenced the fashion of the time.
Looking back on my childhood, I remember all the times that I would visit my Grandma Susie at her house. She always had a sewing task in the process and I would always ask her if I could help her. She would let me do little things like sew a square or roll up the yarn.

This was also the period where the word “European” was put in use and understood by other places, and the word “Renascrere” originated from the Italian word “Renascrere” and it meant to be re-born. For me, fashion dictates how a person sense of style is; some may be bold and loud or simple and calm in which it also gives others an outlook on how their character may be. Although fashion is a way to express ones’ sense of style it does not tells us who the person is personally. Fashion in the society of the 1900s has changed female gender roles then and now by the way their roles changed during the time.
In its history, America has been one of the most influential, and influenced cultures of the world. So many different people, ideas, and products have been in and out of this country that American culture is one of , if not, the most diverse social structure of its time. Although it has been through many evolutions and revolutions, a certain time in this nation’s history can be pinpointed as its most drastic. The cultural movement of the 1960s was one of the largest evolutions of its kind that America has experienced thus far as it separated the rebellious youth from the traditional norm practiced by their well-seasoned elders.
From the moment I starting my educational path I knew four years wouldn’t be enough to fill me with all the dimensions of the fashion industry. This led me to make my decision to apply for the M.S. Global Fashion Enterprise degree. When asked how this program at Philadelphia University would benefit me, I will begin by giving a background on my previous education. I started my undergraduate degree at Buffalo State College in upstate New York pursuing a Bachelor degree in Fashion Merchandising. After being in the program for a year I was confident in knowing I needed a change. My journey changed drastically when I moved down to sunny Fort Lauderdale, Florida where I transferred to the Art Institute under the same major. I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fashion Merchandising come this June 2014. My experience at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale has uncovered my love of education and research.

In post-war Britain, the role of women was beginning to change from the social normality. In this era, it was suddenly expected of women to do the jobs their husband was unable to do, as they were out in war. Their roles in society shifted from housewife and domestic caregiver, to female factory worker. This proved somewhat positive as women discovered their strength and intelligence that had before been hidden under their oppression. It is in this era, fashion photography aimed to explore the independence and business side of a woman, while maintaining her femininity. To discuss the representation of women in a post-war society, I will specifically look at the works of Norman Parkinson, notably the image titled The Art of Travel.
