The sport of volleyball was created in 1895 by William G. Morgan. He was the Director of Physical Education of the YMCA of Massachusetts. William Morgan was born in the state of New York and studied at Springfield College, Massachusetts. According to Bellis (2014), “Ironically at Springfield, Morgan met James Naismith who invented basketball in 1891. Naismith’s game of basketball was inspiration for Mr. Morgan to formulate the game of volleyball.”
Mr. Morgan formed this game by merging various components from other sports to construct a less intense pastime for the elder businessmen that took his courses. The other sports that Morgan used to create this game were baseball, handball, Faustball (a German game), and tennis (how the net came about).
The volleyball, a net, and a court are the equipment used to play a game. The net is set at seven and a half feet tall for the females and eight feet tall for the males. The poles on each side of the net are called Antennae. If the ball strikes antennae or hits outside of either, the ball will be called out of bounds. The attack lines separate the front and backcourts. The front row players are situated between the attack line and the net. The back row players are between the attack line and the end line. The center line splits the court in half and it is below the net. Players can touch the center line but they may not cross it. These actions will result in a fault for that team. When faults and errors occur they result in one point for the opposite squad. The service area is the space outside the end lines where the ball is served from.

Volleyball is a great pastime played by many people. Many enjoy the game just to rev up their engines. It is a great way to get the blood flowing. It is a game that can be played by all ages. Many family and friends play the game on beaches, at parks, and in recreational centers. There are many different leagues for people of all ages to be involved in. It can be a very competitive game. However, games are made to be played for all to enjoy. Middle school aged children are usually time when children can began to play on organized teams. This could result into a future Morgan Trophy winner.
Volleyball is one of the biggest team sports there are. It is big in the summer olympics and all around the world men and women play it every day. The game of volleyball was originally called “mintonette”, it was invented by William G. Morgan in 1895 at Springfield College in Massachusetts, they made it along with basketball. In 1957 volleyball was officially an Olympic sport, the first games were held in Tokyo 1964 and the first beach volleyball games were in 1996 Atlanta. In London 2012, USA got 12 silver medals. In the Olympics, the Soviet Union has won the most medals. The best country right now is Brazil, winning gold medals in London 2012. One of the best volleyball players from Minnesota right now is Tori Dixon who played for the Gophers
I have played volleyball for 5 years. I have played school volleyball for five years, and club volleyball for four. Throughout my years of playing, I have recognized a significant difference between club volleyball and school volleyball. I have played for two clubs in my four years of playing club. The first two years, I played for a club named Platform Elite. The last two years, I have played for Iowa Select, and this year I am playing my club season with Infinity X. Personally, I prefer club volleyball over school volleyball. Club volleyball and school volleyball can be compared in three different categories: price, competition, and “politics” within the sport and its’ players.
Who invented the game of volleyball? William G. Morgan was the inventor volleyball. He was a physical director of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). During the time, Morgan was living in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Basketball was just created and Morgan thought it was too aggressive. After basketball, volleyball was created by William G. Morgan.
Volleyball represents my most meaningful commitment not just because I have invested so much into it, but also because it it’s a passion of mine and has been a part of my life since elementary school. The impact my coaches and teammates have had on my life has helped make me the confident and determined individual I am today. Volleyball also takes up a lot of time and there are many sacrifices that come with the sport and playing on a team. To keep up my skills, I have had to give up a lot of my free time and parts of my summer. Balancing school with practices was also a challenge, but participating in one of my passions made it worthwhile. I have persevered through difficult times and learned new lessons along the way, so there is nothing that could make this sport less meaningful to me. (148)
She passes, she sets, she hits. Kill! Volleyball is a very interesting sport and is the second most popular sport in the whole world falling behind soccer. The way volleyball was created, how it has changed over time, and the rules of volleyball give it a really cool and interesting history.
Though soccer may have been the earliest organized sport in the British colonies and early United States, it soon had to compete with baseball, football, and basketball. The first baseball game was on June 9th, 1846. People liked it because younger people could play. It was very popular among immigrants from England, Germany, and Ireland. In 1857 the National Association of Baseball Players was started. Then December 5th, 1856 a newspaper called baseball the “national pastime.” Then by the late 1800s American football, which combined rugby and Boston soccer, became increasingly popular. Three presidents played or coached football: Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Basketball was not invented until t...
In both sports, training, having a good season, using appropriate uniforms and equipments are needed. Both sports use uniforms, sports shoes, water bottles and an adequate weight to train. However, these sports have some significant differences as well as similarities. One of the differences is the net. In Basketball, for example, the hoop is 18 inches in diameter and 10 feet high located in both sides of the court. On the contrary, the net in Volleyball is 39 inches tall and 32 feet long; this provides one foot of netting on each side of the court. Another important difference is the ball. In Basketball, the ball has an inflatable inner rubber bladder wrapped in layers of fiber and covered with a tacky surface made with leather, rubber, or
Volleyball is the constant confirmation of Newton’s first Law. Every object remains at rest or in motion in a strait line at a constant speed unless acted on by an unbalanced force(P.31). The unbalanced forces that the team members try to manipulate are what make volleyball so interesting. The goal in volleyball is to keep a ball in legally in motion for your team, while trying to force the opponent to fail at keeping the ball in motion. There a few basic possible ways of legally contacting the ball: serving, passing, setting, hitting, and blocking. Each is unique and yet similar. The contact between the player and ball forces a “collision” and different laws of physics explain the actions or reactions of these collisions. This is what makes volleyball so exciting.
120 years ago, volleyball was first introduced as a sport at the YMCA. William G. Morgan started the game calling it “mintonette”. It was originally a combination

The sport is what we know today as basketball. Basketball is however, completely different than it was in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. A man in Massachusetts with the last name Naismith, was given a task to create an organized team sport that could be held indoors during the cold winter months. It was not an easy task because he was trying to come up with a game that was completely different than any of the other outdoor sports that were too dangerous to play indoors. He also had to create a sport that involved teamwork and not just one or two players being the star of the game. The players had to communicate during the game in order to do well. There could not be one person that carried the whole team but, a collaborative team effort in order to score and win the game. The game of basketball would eventually change to become the game that we know
To start of with, I will tell you how the game of volleyball and the volleyball itself came to be. First off, the volleyball was first needed in 1895 when William Morgan invented the game of volleyball. Morgan invented the game for people who could not keep up with the fast
The Volleyball sport was created in 1985 by William G. Morgan. The inventor wanted to create a game that used a ball and a net. Unfortunately, at that time there were no balls that fit that idea. In the beginning, players used a basketball; however, the basketball’s heavy weight made the ball go slow in the air. Morgan decided on a different idea instead.
I have decided to focus this mathematical investigation on volleyball. I have always enjoyed playing volleyball as a sport and I wanted to see if it would be possible to use mathematics to predict if I could win after being a certain amount of points behind my opponent. After doing some research, I noticed that even though it is possible to calculate the basic probability of winning after losing for a few points, there are still many variables that may affect the actual outcome of the game. Thus, I decided that I wanted to focus on one specific aspect of volleyball that would actually help me become a better volleyball player. The technique that I ended up choosing is serving because serving is one of the most basic ways that can
