The Case For Derek Jeter 's Hall of Fame Career Derek Sanderson Jeter is an unforgettable component of Major League Baseball History. The Captain will always be in the top contention of baseball greats. The greatest achievement after a player 's career is to be inducted into the MLB Hall of fame. Derek Jeter should be in the Hall of Fame due to his outstanding statistics, his separation from other shortstops in Major League history, his unforgettable leadership, his off field behavior, and his astonishing achievements. Derek has statistically finished at the top or near to it in several different categories. D.J. is most famous for blasting 3,465 hits and earning his spot of

Derek was drafted by the Yankees with the 6th pick of the draft out of high school. Despite turning down dozens of D1 offers, he decided to take a chance at entering the MLB (Derek Jeter Stats, Video Highlights, Photos, Bio). Derek came up short a few times in the MVP voting. The seasons he didn 't win, he lost only to people who had seasons that will forever be in the record book. In Jeter 's Prime, he played against some of the best players in the last half century. The Captain has finished in 2nd place once, and 3rd place twice in MVP voting. Winning MVP is an extremely hard thing to do. Many contradict and say he should have won the three years he finished in the top three. In 2000, Derek was named the MVP of both the All-Star Game and the World Series (DerekJeter.com). That is something that is extremely uncommon. Mr. November lead the MLB in hits during the years 1999 and 2012 (Derek Jeter Stats, Video Highlights, Photos, Bio). He has won five career World Series in the years 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2009 (Derek Jeter Stats, Video Highlights, Photos, Bio). Very few players will even have a chance at a World Series ring let alone to win five. Derek Jeter was honored and accepted to play for Team USA in the first-ever World Baseball Classic (Derek Jeter Stats, Video Highlights, Photos, Bio). This honor is only an option to the best United States natives. D.J. has also received 13 All-Star Game …show more content…
Derek Jeter holds Yankees career records for hits, games played, stolen bases, at-bats, and singles (Derek Jeter Stats, Video Highlights, Photos, Bio). The New York Yankees have had many notorious Hall of Famers play for them such as Babe Ruth, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, and Lou Gehrig. Derek Jeter surpassed them and many other Hall of Famers in all of those categories which were thought to never be broken (Derek Jeter Stats, Video Highlights, Photos, Bio). Jeter became captain of the New York Yankees in 2003. He was only the 11th player to achieve this milestone. Most of the 10 captains before him later made it into the Hall of Fame. Derek, alongside Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada, became the first trio to have played together in 16 seasons in MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL history (Derek Jeter Stats, Video Highlights, Photos,
Babe Ruth is still a very well-known person in history today, even almost one-hundred years later. He did not only change the way people viewed negro baseball leagues, but he also gained a large reputation for his ability to play baseball, obviously due to his amazing abilities. Ruth’s ability to play was almost impossibly good, in fact, he was even titled “athlete of the century” for his ability. With that ability and power that he had once he won, he would become a
Jeter received lots of recognition during his high school years at Kalamazoo Central. Jeter was heavily recruited by Yankees scout Hal Newhouser. After Jeter’s senior season, he received many awards. Among those awards was the 1992 High School Player of the Year for Gatorade, USA today, and the American Baseball Coaches Association. Jeter built up his great confidence through his parents help. Every school year, Derek’s parents would make him sign a contract on the dos and don’ts of Derek’s daily behavior. His parents always tol...
Many considered Clemens’ best years the 13 seasons he was at the Red Sox. After 1996 he was not re-signed by the Red Sox because they felt he was in the twilight of his career. He was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays where he struggled a lot early on. Despite these early struggles, his career had a resurgence that many did not see coming. This resurgence is what caused the speculations of steroid use. After two years with the Toronto Blue Jays he won had the Cy Young award and the pitching Triple Crown both seasons. The triple crown is awarded to the pitcher that, at seasons end, leads the league in the three major categories: earned run average, wins, and strikeouts.
Albert Pujols said, “Baseball was an outlet for him to be able to do that, and he had some special talent to go through what he did and still set an example for others. You cannot replace it.”
does have downfalls in his reputation and his actions throughout the long term of his life, but he still changed the game of baseball and gave people hope while doing so. When all the fame, rush of the spotlight, youth, and the wild side of Babe ruth settled down, his great qualities and the good he did really started to shine through. He did fill the stands of baseball by giving people hope and thrill throughout the war time and Great Depression (Family). He set stunning records that would forever be remembered in the baseball community and in the United States in general. It requires a unique and special hero to continue to have the effect that Babe Ruth still has today. Babe Ruth does deserve to be recognized as one of the most influential people in
He had one of the game's most glorious seasons in 1941, hitting for an average of .406 at the age of twenty three. He is the last player to accomplish this feat. Nevertheless, he lost out on the most valuable player award that year to Joe DiMaggio, who had posted his 56 game hitting streak that same year. He most likely lost this MVP award because of his lack of respect and his arrogance to many of the sports writers and media, who are the ones who vote for the winner ( Nightingale).
Since then he has led his team to five world series titles and become the team captain. He is known for his good looks and quiet confidence. He is still playing shortstop for the Yankee’s today and never stops improving. More world series titles are seen in his future.
He spent most of his 24-year career playing with the Reds, Rose also played with the Phillies and the Expos. In 1985, Rose broke one of the most “unbreakable” records of all time, by passing out Ty Cobb for the most career hits ever (Sports Illustrated). Rose holds many records, some of which are: most games played, most at bats, and most singles by a major league baseball player.... ... middle of paper ...
Greg Maddux has received four Cy Young Awards in his thirteen-year career. The Cy Young Award is the award that is given to the best pitcher for the year. Nolan Ryan never received a single Cy Young Award. This is an especially hard accomplishment now. The recent years in baseball have been the biggest offensive years that the sport has ever seen. There has been more batters with 30, 40, or 50 homeruns than there has any other time in history. Greg Maddux has to face at least one thirty-homerun man every time he pitches and still has a career e.r.a. (earned run average) of 2.75. Ryan’s career e.r.a. is 3.19 and he did not have to face as many hitters that could hurt a pitcher.

Even after reaching that milestone his Hall of Fame credentials were questioned by the media. The one fact that is pionted out most oftern is the fact that his .287 lifetime batting average is second lowest in the 3000 hit club. Only Carl Yastremsky, whose lifetime average was .285, is lower. They are also quick to point out he went to only 3 all-star games in his 19 year career, and he has never veen considered one of the games best players. But one sports writer says that: "Yount's hit total is enough on it's own to qualify him for the Hall." (Kurkjian p.48)
Breaking the Racial Barrier in Baseball Although Jackie Robinson was not the best African-American baseball player of his time, his attitude and ability to handle racist harassment led the way for the rest of his race to play Major League Baseball, amongst other sports. Being accepted into professional sports also helped African-Americans become more easily accepted into other aspects of life. Jackie's impact in the world for the black population is enormous. According to Jessie Jackson, "A champion wins a World Series or an Olympic event and is hoisted on the shoulders of the fans.
This record stood until 1961 when Roger Maris hit 61 home runs. He might have been the best baseball player who ever played the game. He led the Yankees to seven World Series and made two million dollars in his career. Jack "the Manassa Mauler" Dempsey was one of the best heavyweight boxers of all time. He was a heavyweight champion and fought and won against Georges Carpentier.
...rst all time in total accumulated bases with 6,856. He was second all time in at bats with 12,364. He was third all time in hits with 3,771. He was third all time in runs scored with 2,174. He was also third all time in games played with 3,298. He was elected into the Hall Of Fame in 1982. His autobiography, I had a Hammer, was published in 1990. In 1999, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of breaking Babe Ruth’s record, Major League announced the Hank Aaron Award, given to the best overall hitter in each league.
Some would even argue that Jeter was the greatest leader in the history of the game of baseball. Derek was even given the nickname “The Captain” which suited him very well. He guided the New York Yankee vessel for almost 20 years, and led them to five World Series championships. Ever since the day that he was drafted by the organization, players chose to follow him. Jeter’s ex-teammate and former coach, Joe Girardi, said, “(His leadership) is by example, and one-on-one; he’s going to take players aside and talk to them, and the way he plays the game, people will follow” (DiPietro). According to Girardi, Jeter led in more than one way. Girardi believed that people would follow Jeter, but he also believed that Jeter would pull people aside and confront them, when necessary. According to Joe Torre, another one of Jeter’s ex-managers, Jeter came onto the scene and began leading almost immediately (DiPietro). It is very unusual for a player to be a leader at such a young age, but Jeter did it and did it well. There was a distinct moment in time when Joe Torre knew that Jeter was going to be leader for a long, long time to come. That moment came during the 1996 season, which was Jeter’s rookie
