Recommended: Department of Homeland Security mission and protecting American citizens

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are both integral parts of the defense of the nation. Both agencies attempt to prevent, mitigate, and respond to acts of terrorism, cyber security issues and disasters. The agencies each have their own respective goals and tasks regarding the aforementioned issues, even though the above matters are a joint concern. The website for the FBI (fbi.gov) states that the agency is tasked with investigating terrorism, cyber crime, and weapons of mass destruction (WMD). The Department of Justice (DOJ) (2004) issued a new set of priorities for the agency, the priorities were listed by importance. This responsibility is more along the lines of guarding and responding to incidents, as opposed to law enforcement. PPD 41 (2016) states that the DHS will be the lead agency for asset response in response to a cyber related attack. Alexander, Goldman and Warner (2013) the DHS is the lead agency responsible for protecting the nation from domestic cyber attacks(p. 21). DHS and more specifically the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has the major responsibility of disaster management and relief. FEMA plays a significant role because they are the only major organization that acts in this capacity.
