The smell, the atmosphere and the whir of dentist's drill had always brought me on the shakes and a racing heart as a kid whenever I went to see the dentist. Of course, going to the dentist never ranked high on my "want to do" list since I was a kid. Sadly, my love of sweets always ended up taking me to the dental chair and as my youth teeth continued to fall out and grow; there never seemed to an end to my trips to the dentist. Needless to say, I was scared of going to the dentist. At that time, I never knew that I would enjoy going to the dentist's office so much. As I matured and became more deliberate about figuring out what I want to do with my life during my college career, I realized that dentistry is exactly what I want to do. Seeing patients go out of their way to good and observing dentists make a positive difference in people's lives made a long lasting impression on me. Surrounded by people dedicated to delivering free dental care, I was taught values and meanings for contributing to others’ lives. I found a sense of fulfillment, meaning and joy of healing in the service of others. This experience made me realize that I ultimately want a profession that enables me to serve others. My understanding of dentist's role as a healer, listener and trusted health care practitioner and my love for science intrigued me and strengthened my interest in dentistry. My interest and curiosity in dentistry brought out the best of me, so I decided to volunteer in a dental lab where science and art go hand in hand to create dental restorations. By doing this, I was able to study teeth anatomy which enabled me to gain the knowledge and experiences that I needed to shadow the dentist. Having
