A speaker who uses speech as a means for personal gain at the expense others is speaking unethically. Orators must remain selfless in their speech, using the powers of persuasion to benefit their audience. Demagogues are an example of unethical speakers. Demagogues speak to the masses convincing them that helping him helps them. He (I don’t know why the demagogue is a he, but I needed a pronoun) uses hateful and angry speech to move the people to action. Demagogues can turn people to war, such as Cleon did in ancient Greece when he turned the Greeks against the Spartans, sparking a war that ultimately led to his demise. Ann Richards’s keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in 1988 was extremely interesting to watch. I believe her speech was intended to be focused on the American family and also the American farmers. These two areas seemed to be very important to Mrs. Richards and she made a point to discuss both.
Politics is dirty and competitive and has not changed between 1879 and 2018. It is a complex system of jargon, charm, facts, and lies. Mark Twain’s “The Presidential Candidate” satirically expresses the essence of both old-world and modern politics as a presidential candidate who blatantly tells the truth of his wrongdoings. As a politician, one must be an open book. Their life must be truthfully written on the pages for the readers to analyze and evaluate their credibility as leaders. “The Presidential Candidate” resonates both in 1879 and 2018 with his use of humor, use of diction and use of subtlety.
American politics have long revolved around the Grand Old Party and the Democratic Party. Arguably every conflict can be drawn back to the exacerbation of these two discordant parties. Both entities refuse to approach middle ground because it would hinder the respective party’s prestige or disobey ideals held for the past two centuries. Being a noted Democratic advocate, forty second US president William Clinton speaks at the Democratic National Convention. Because he employs rhetorical strategies, such as antithesis and procatalepsis, the partiality in his speech not only extols the Democrat’s persona but also degrades the Republican’s image.
In Coercion, Douglas Rushkoff explains how easily people are easily coerced. For example, Rushkoff states that people are convinced by car salesman to pay more for a car than they wanted to. In Julius Caesar, Marc Antony asks to speak at the funeral of his dear friend, Julius Caesar, after one of the murderers, Brutus, speaks. Brutus convinces the Romans that Caesar would be a tyrant if he did not murder him, while Antony convinces the Romans that Caesar is not ambitious and there would never be another ruler like Caesar. The art of public speaking is important in the past and present.
Propaganda is usually associated with brainwashing and manipulation, however it is justifiable when it is used to promote safety and health. For example, in public service announcements to warn the citizens of hazards and to promote safety to protect the people from the dreadful habits of the modern world. The main purpose of PSA’s are to make people aware and to make them act to reach a goal.
On December 2,2015 I went to to the Lynnhaven building to receive some feedback on my agreement paper for English 111. It was a very rainy day after running through the rain when I reached the writing center room. There was a yellow note saying that the writing center was in the student center until December 4,2015. After reading the note I ran back in the rain to my car.It was to cold to walk it was raining. As I approached the student center I was told by a security guard that the tutoring lab was located on the third floor. I had walked up three flights of stairs. When I had finally reached the third floor,I walk into the tutoring lab. There were about eight tables, but only four staff members and one student. Amen had approached me asking what did I need help with today. I replied saying that I would like some feedback on my paper for English. He then pointed to the writing table and said “she can assist you with your paper”.
“The beauty of me is that I am very rich” according to Donald Trump. His ignorance has lead him to do things that he shouldn’t being doing or has done. In the past few months he has been racist man that would insult people that are from a different race. When Trump started running for president he would insult and bully everybody in general not knowing the people’s stories. He made people seem like they are poor and have nothing to live for, Trump’s inability to see past his greed. He wants to separate the United States and wants people to think he is the best of the best; Trump should not be President.
In an article by Gienapp (2015), he stated that as the U.S. was being created, the Framers explored various types of government. The first was the Article of the Confederation which had a lot of problems and weaknesses that needed to be fixed, it required a succession of long debates, and it caused a great deal of regional conflict. Because of this, in the hopes that it will solve most of the problems, the Framers in 1787 began drafting the Constitution as well as signed it which replaced the Article of the Confederation. There was a push for ratification of the Constitution by two parties, one supporting it while the other opposed it. Kim Davis is currently considered a hero of religious liberty to many Christians around the world but her “heroic acts” can very easily be identified as unlawful actions. Mrs. Kimberly Jean Bailey Davis was elected County Clerk for Rowan County, Kentucky, back in 2014. Luckily for her, the United States laws were not a problem when it came to her religious beliefs back when she was elected. However, on Friday, June 26th, 2015 the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples can marry nationwide, establishing a new civil right and finally giving gay rights advocates a well deserved victory. Amidst the crowded race for the 2016 GOP nomination, one candidate has constantly been making headlines: Donald Trump. Trump has set himself apart from the rest of the candidates as he has become a sort of media sensation. His celebrity makes him a novelty in the journey to the White House, and his incendiary rhetoric has caught the attention of the nation. The contents of Trump’s rhetoric can be broken down into Aristotle’s three artistic proofs, which are described in Topoi: An International Review of Philosophy as: ethos—or character, pathos—drawing on the audience’s emotions, and logos—logical discourse (Meyer 249). Trump’s appeals to logos are weak, so he depends on his appeals to ethos and pathos to make up for his lack of legitimate
Gaining the credibility in a speech can be difficult at times and can test even the best speakers ability to keep the crowds attention and respect. One of the ways to keep credibility with a crowd is practicing and applying appeal to ethics. Which is defined as winning the favor of the audience by showing strong credibility in the speaker (Merriam-Webster). One of the best speeches that exemplifies the usage of appeal to ethics is Patrick Henry’s “Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death” speech where he addresses an issue of war at the revolutionary convention. Henry through appeal to ethics developed his credibility and wanted the people listening at the convention to believe they can’t sit and do nothing instead they have to get their hands dirty and fight.
