In the story “A Worn Path”, there were several moments that would have made Phoenix abandon her mission. Despite all her delusions, the three moments was the barbed wire fence, the black dog, and her memory. The barbed wire fence she had to get through to get to where she was going was an obstacle. She had to creep and crawl, spreading her knees and stretching her fingers like a baby trying to climb the steps (Kirszner & Mandell, 2012). When a black dog appeared and came after her, she fell in a ditch and was unable to get up. A white male hunter was the one who helped her up only to point a gun at her wanting her to show fear. To Louisa, taking the dog off his chain symbolically relates to her being freed from the constraints Joe is putting on her. Because she, like the dog, have been alone for so long, it would be frightening to go out and experience new things. People tend to do what they know, and for fourteen years, Louisa and her pets have been accustomed to solitude. The man's influence is seen as disruptive since it threatens change on Louisa's life. The symbolism Freeman portrays between the pets and Louisa is immense and obvious. Because of this, it is easy for the reader to make such connections. Freeman's choices make this an easy to read story that appeals to all readers at all different skill levels.
Forcing someone to take medication or be hospitalized against their will seems contrary to an individual’s right to refuse medical treatment, however, the issue becomes complicated when it involves individuals suffering from a mental illness. What should be done when a person has lost their grasp on reality, or if they are at a risk of harming themselves or others? Would that justify denying individuals the right to refuse treatment and issuing involuntary treatment? Postpartum Without the Parta: An Analysis of Psychosis in The Turn of the Screw After women experience childbirth, it is common for them to experience postpartum depression. For the women suffering this type of depression, they can experience different instances of fear, insomnia and moments of anxiety and paranoia. In the novella The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, the narrator begins to show the signs for postpartum depression and psychosis, without having any children and shows a hidden sexual desire about the children. Because of her fear, panicked actions and hasty generalizations throughout the novella, it is clear for readers to question the governess’ sanity and see that she is in a deep stage of psychosis. The Turn of the Screw starts off with the governess arriving at the home to begin her job.
This article seems to describe a man who had a psychotic break with reality, which could be attributed to schizophrenia. We can see that this man, Todd West, suddenly developed weird behavior as well as hallucinatory voices. As Joanne Greenberg explains schizophrenic people often interact in compulsive illogical thinking which going on a rampage would be constituted as. (Greenberg, 18) Their are two hallmark of schizophrenia that: false memories and beliefs that are all consuming and also hallucinations that can affect any of the senses. (Greenberg, 50) Although these symptoms always appear in a schizophrenic patient they can appear at different levels, some people are much more involved with their delusions then others. It’s December when Phoenix starts on her journey to Natchez and it is a journey she has taken many times before. This journey is no journey an elderly and weaken person should have to make by themselves, yet Phoenix does. She does not allow her age or her condition to keep her from it. Deep through the pines, the path takes her, and her first task would be to make it over a hill that seems to take all her energy and strength. “Seems like there is chains around my feet, time I get this far…” (Welty 5), here the reader can tell Phoenix does not have the strength that she really needs to make it up the hill. Yet somewhere she finds the will to keep pushing on and moving forward. This same type of spirit that allows Phoenix to keep pushing forward in society, and not to back down. Showing the younger generation that you have to fight your way through to a brighter day. She states, "I wish my dog was out tearing up the town". A couple sentences down, Chris tells her "You have control over this" and then says "“You can decide how long she suffers”, by him saying this he is talking about her putting down the dog. She thinks over what he said and she said to herself that it wouldn't be so terrible, so she is questioning it. Her trip is full of obstacles, from bushes of thorns that get caught in her dress, to her crossing of a creek. Other clinical types include Schizoaffective Disorder, Bipolar Affective Disorder/Manic depression, mania, Psychotic depression, delusional (paranoid) disorders. These are mental disorders in which the thoughts, affective response or ability to recognize reality, and ability to communicate and relate to others are sufficiently impaired to interfere grossly with the capacity to deal with reality; the classical and general characteristics of psychosis are impaired reality testing, hallucinations, delusions, and illusions. Phoenix's precarious journey may seem dangerous, but her determination is what carries her through the obstacles she faces as she makes her way through the woods. Phoenix makes her way across the worn path and discovers many active opponents. She continues forward over barriers that would not even be considered a hindrance for the young. The long hill that she takes tires her, the thornbrush attempts to catch her clothes, the log that Phoenix goes across endangers her balance as she walks across it, and the barbed-wire fence threatens to puncture her skin. All of these impediments that Phoenix endures apparently do not affect her because she is determined that nothing will stop her on her journey.
