Social Order and Status of Women Dr. Seema Shrivastava H.O.D. Economics Govt. P.G. College Meaning of social order By the social order we mean the manner in which a society is organized and the rules and standards require to maintain that organization. We can explain the term social order as: • a particular set or system of linked social structures, institutions, relations, customs, values and practices, which conserve, maintain and enforce certain patterns of relating and behaving. Examples the ancient, the feudal, and the capitalist social order. • a stable state of society in which the existing social order is accepted and maintained by its members. They were never given any right of liberty & equality and were treated in a humiliated manner. They were not allowed to step outside their house and were also denied from being educated. Even women were not taken to doctor if they fell ill. They used to eat after their family members or even have to eat their husband’s leftovers. Women were not involved in any external matters as well as domestic matters. They were under the influence of their father, husband and son In the early Vedic period women enjoyed equivalent status & rights as enjoyed by their male counterparts .They were educated and had the freedom to choose their husbands.
