Effective Leadership Styles: Lessons from the Navy

Leadership has many different definitions. My definition of leadership is someone who is fluid in any situation, an effective communicator, a listener, very approachable, and a motivator. A successful leader is often deemed so by how successful the people he or she is leading are. There has been many great leaders with different styles that have all been successful. I have been in the Navy for 20 years and have had the opportunity to experience a few good leaders, on top of a few that were not so good. My first Chief was a great leader in my eyes, he was very knowledgeable, direct with his message and vision for the division, and most of all he was extremely approachable. I was genuinely interested in what kind-of feedback I would get. When I was able to review the results of the survey it was definitely eye opening. Areas that I thought I was not doing so well in were identified by my peers as being some of my stronger traits. I certainly enjoyed the section of the LPI that had their written answers. Even though most of the feedback was positive, the few responses that discussed areas that I could improve on are invaluable. I was complacent with doing whatever was easiest. I was successful at my job and things had become fairly simple. I have come to understand that this mentality was holding back my growth as a leader. Not long ago, I volunteered to be the coordinator for CPO 365 Phase II. I was apprehensive that I would not do a good job and that I could possibly fail. Nonetheless, one of my coworkers kept pushing me to volunteer as the coordinator saying that he thought I would do a great job and it would help me with networking across the Subase. Networking would help in my Chief of The Boat Qualifications. It is still early in evaluating how much effect it has had in my COB qualifications, but it has helped me meet more post served COB's and that is certainly not a bad
