The Origin of Christmas Christmas, the time of giving, friends, family, feasts, and Christmas carols to sing! Such a wonderful time of the year! It’s a day that was meant for people to come together and give to each other to show how much we all care for each other. People would even go out as a group moving around a town, or going from door to door singing to people their Christmas carol that they chose to sing. Families would travel long distances so they can all come together and give each and every one in the family a present of their choice. The whole family would also make a big feast to eat together as a family. However, why do people do all this on one special occasion such as this? Christmas exists mainly because of Jesus Christ and the Romans. Many Christians accept the popular myth that Jesus Christ was born on December 25th, which is why most Christians celebrated Christmas on December 25th. However, it wasn’t fully Christmas until the romans came along and gave us most of the Christmas Customs we know of today. You see, the romans celebrated on December 25th, not Christmas, but a holiday called Saturnalia, the pagan Roman winter solstice festival. Pagans has worshipped trees in the forest so much, that they decided to take some home and decorate them, which became apart of Saturnalia. The Christmas presents everyone in the family gives to each other, also came from Saturnalia. The catholic church only gave this specific custom a Christian flavor by making it like how Saint Nicholas gave out gifts. All the Christmas carols we sing, came from Saturnalia. However, we have different songs, or carols that we sing, we gave a Christmas flavor to best represent
