“It’s a bird, It’s a plane, It’s Superman!” We have all heard this statement at one point or another in our lives. Everyone knows what a superhero is, but what really makes someone a hero? Dictionary.com defines a hero as, “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.” By that definition, there is no mention of super powers and non-human qualities. A hero is not a person who can fly and lift cars to save a baby; they are normal people with incredible courage and bravery who selflessly choose to help those around them. A hero has certain qualities: engaging voluntarily, conducting in service to one or more people or the community as a whole, involving a risk to physical comfort, social structure, and quality of life, and initiate without the expectation of material gain (What Really is a Hero, Anyways?). …show more content…

To some people, a hero could be a teacher, a best friend, a family member, or a leader in their community. To a child, it could be an iconic superhero that they see on TV and in movies, like Superman, Thor, or Captain America. People think of a variety of things when they think of a hero: a conqueror, an idol, a model, a champion, or an adventurer. A hero can be a lot of things, but he cannot be selfish, cowardly, lazy, and mischievous. They have to look toward the improvement of their community, but not the improvement of their own lives.
