We live in a society whereby money or status is everything. People are no longer respected for their good deeds, decency and character, but only respected for the size of their pockets or wealth or even qualification. Merriam Webster’s dictionary defines respect as “a feeling or understanding that someone or something is important, serious etc. and should be treated in an appropriate way”. I agree with this definition because it touches ones understanding of the next person (regardless of their earnings) and emphasizes on appropriate treatment (humanity). What then shall we say about respect, should it be given or should it be earned/returned?

I agree with this definition because how one sees the world, their self-concept influences their behavior towards others. I believe that we are all human, no one is be above the other no matter what qualification, status or wealth or power that one may hold therefore, no one should be belittle because of the salaries they receive, occupation of their parents nor educational background. My view on respect is that it is precious, so expensive that no money can buy it. I believe that respect is/ should be guided by character, how one presents themselves to others, the manner in which one addresses others regardless of how they are and most of all humanity therefore, I believe respect must only be given to those give it, to who have earned it through their actions and act of kindness towards others. My view on respect is in a Modern- Western and traditional World view. Western World View emphasizes equality, freedom and individualism hence I believe that if respect is not shown then no respect should under no circumstance be given. Traditional (African) World View promotes humanity, the spirit of UBUNTU “umuntu umuntu ngabantu” which simply means that person is a person through other people. Once a person understands that they are not any better than the other, it becomes easier for them to get along with the next person because they’ll see each other as equals and can easily relate to one another. African world view brings about unity and acknowledging other people’s existence no matter their status, it is all about embracing our differences, tolerating each other and being united, which is what my world view emphasizes and all that begins with love and respect for each despite our
