Capital punishment is a penalty which involves killing someone who has committed a crime (Longman Dictionary). It has been practiced for around thousands of years. However, a great number of countries have abolished executions in recent decades. According to the statistic, “In 1985, 73 percent of the countries had death penalty statutes for ordinary crimes and 63 percent made active use of it. Today, less than half of the countries in the world retain the death penalty and only 30 percent actually apply it”(2014, p.9). The Canadian government outlawed the death penalty in 1976. Polls show that approximately seventy percent of Canadians supported it. Although the side which against the death penalty won the debate about the reinstation of death penalty in 1987, there were also “more than 60% of Canadians still favored the practice on the grounds.” Based on the data, we can see that there were a large proportion of Canadians people have a positive attitude towards death penalty. People are highly suffering from the crimes, so they hope that the government can strictly enforce the sentencing law in order to reduce the crimes. Because the impact of capital punishment is very deterrent, there will be decreasing number of offenders join the criminal activities. Therefore, people do not have to worry too much about whether they will be killed or thieved by those criminals. Also, people especially who are victims want the death penalty because of the retribution for criminals. The Michigan State University (2000) mentioned that “only the taking of the murderer's life restores the balance and allows society to show convincingly that murder is an intolerable crime which will be punished in kind”(p.5). Due to the fact that the civil liberties of all people are fair, there are no valid reasons that people deprive others of lives. The murders must get sternly penalized if they kills other people. Donovan (2014) mentioned, “the cost of imprisoning each inmate is about $150,000 per year”. The cost is too high to put an inmate into the jails for decades of years. Therefore, the Canadian government will waste a large amount of money on it.
