Dead reckoning may be better known to some as a murder mystery novel set in world war two, a romance book involving vampires or a book on mathematics. These maybe good books, but dead reckoning the is more important as a tool to navigate than as a book. In the past dead reckoning has been the basis for the invention of tools to better navigate the ocean. Dead reckoning as according to the DIY Wood Boat is the “determination without the aid of celestial observations of the position of a ship or aircraft from the record of the courses sailed or flown, the distance made, and the known or estimated drift.” This form of navigation was used when sailing across bodies of water when the shore was not in site. It was used by many sailors such as Christopher …show more content…

Due to the fears of the crew navigators would use the compass in secret. One of the biggest problems with sailing was a lack of standard measurement. they started measuring how far they traveled by throwing something like say a piece of drift wood behind the boat with a rope attracted. The roped had knots tied an equal distance from one another as the knots fell into the ocean they would be counted to see how far they had traveled. Which is how the distance the boats were going was referred to as knotical miles. Notical miles today equal about one and a half miles which created consistency. Though the problems of navigation for sea fair had been remedied later on their proved to be a whole new problem with dead reckoning. The invention of planes which used dead reckoning and a compass to plot their courses faced similar problems that sailors had faced due to inaccuracy and having to look to the down for land marks given on their maps. Over time they slowly advanced in the field of navigation with radar and eventually the use of a GPS or Global Positioning
