The attack on Pearl Harbor was very gruesome, causing many deaths on both the American and Japanese sides. The attack on Hawaii left many people wondering if Roosevelt knew something that the people did not know. Many people do not know about the attack on Pearl Harbor, why Hawaii did not expect it, or the stories of some of the survivors and how they were affected by the attack. Pearl Harbor is located in Oahu, Hawaii. Pearl Harbor was where the United States naval ships were kept the day of the attack. Out of one hundred ships, seven of them were targeted specifically by Japanese planes. The Japanese grew stronger while the United States faced the Great Depression. Some say that the attack on Pearl Harbor was operated by a group of “crypto-communist” or a group of people who favor or support communism (bbc.co.uk). Roosevelt wanted Japan to be seen as the provoker of the war (bbc.co.uk). The day after the attack, Congress approved Roosevelt’s declaration of war (bbc.co.uk).
Roosevelt saw Germany as an enemy of war. Roosevelt then made a plan to target Germany. He decided that the United States would side with Britain, and they would win the war together (thenewamerican.com). He was on Ford island cooking when the Japanese planes started to attack the ships (news-leader.com). Where he was staying was quickly turned into a place to care for patients. He went from cooking to helping patients right away. He said, “Our mess hall had men laying on tables, wounded guys from the Arizona. I was helping take the worst ones from the mess hall over to the dispensary. There were guys with sores all over their legs from the bombs. It was a mess.”
