Dakota Jackson is considered to be one of America’s leading furniture designers. Having originally started his career as a magician, it is no surprise that Jackson’s designs are considered to be marvellous works of engineering and his early works even included engineering illusions, thus reflecting his background in magic. In 1989, Dakota Jackson entered the mass production furniture market with the Ke-Zu seating collection. Continuing in this mass production market, in 1991 Jackson introduced the ‘Vik-ter’ chair. This ‘bio- morphic’ stacking chair was first introduced at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in Manhattan. The Vik-ter chair’s “highly production oriented” design features a weld- ed-steel frame that curves aswell as a tapered cherry-plywood laminated seat. When asked to write about an important activist who has demonstrated protest, I immediately drifted towards a Hispanic and/or feminist activist. Various names came across my mind initially such as Cesar Chavez and Joan Baez but as a later discussion in class concluded, there are numerous others who are rarely highlighted for their activism and struggles, which lead to me researching more. In my research I came across Dolores Huerta, an American labor leader and civil rights activist, who I felt was an underdog and brushed over activist in the Hispanic community.
Marcel Breuer, born in the early 1900’s in Hungary, was one of the first and youngest students to learn under the Bauhaus style, taught by Walter Gropius. Breuer started his career designing furniture, using tubular, or “handle bar like”, steel (Dodd, Mead, and Company 32). One of the most popular of these furniture designs was his Club Chair B3designed in 1922. In the 1930’s, Breuer moved to the United States to teach and practice architecture. In the 1950’s, he received the Medal of Honor from the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Between 1960 and 1980, Breuer was honored with several honorary doctoral degrees from several universities around the world. After retiring in 1976 due to poor health, Breuer was awarded several other awards, and his work was displayed in exhibitions around the world. Breuer died on July 2nd, 1981, at the age of 79 (Marcel Breuer Associates 6).
Agoraphobia is a psychological disorder characterised by panic and anxiety. This particular anxiety disorder involves the fear of experiencing a panic attack in a public place where safety may be unavailable, which causes discomfort (Lilienfeld, 2017). This disorder is commonly recognized in women and often arises during adolescent years. Often times, people develop agoraphobia after a previous panic attacks, which than causes them to worry about having another in the future (Agoraphobia, 2017). This results in avoidant behaviours, such as evading places where an attack may occur. There are many causes, symptoms, effects on both the individual with the disorder and their loved ones, as well as a variety of treatments available.

The documentary 13th, directed by Ava DuVernay, portrays how although slavery was abolished, through political movements it has transformed and reemerged as mass incarceration. The title refers to the 13th amendment which ended slavery, but as DuVernay shows, it left a loophole which has been thoroughly exploited throughout the years. The United States government has systematically found ways to oppress African Americans which has led to the statistic that today one in three black males go to jail while only one in seventeen white males see the inside of a prison cell. In 1843, an ex-slave named Isabella Baumfree, heard the voice of the Holy Spirit speaking to her. He instructed her to take on a new mission of preaching the people to abstain from sin and to change her name to Sojourner Truth (Sojourner Truth PBS). Sojourner left New York City where she had lived working as a housekeeper and going to spiritual gatherings for the past 15 or so years of her life. Traveling up the Connecticut River Valley, Truth gave speeches on rights for women and slaves as an itinerant preacher (Voices of the Civil War). Her work as an abolitionist and women’s rights activist made a difference for African-Americans, women, and the Union during and around the time of the Civil War.

Back in 1940, the husband and wife together with Eero Saarinen, took part in The Museum of Modern Art’s Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition. It was for this competition where they explored and studied plywood to be made adaptable to the contour of the human body and flexibility according to the design they had in mind. This material however, had splintered and cracked on many of their attempts. A great amount of time for their experiment was spent on analysing the resilience of the plywood. The whole development process for the chair itself took thirteen years to be fully completed and finally produced.

In the essay “I Wish They’d Do It Right”, Doe’s son does not believe in the concept of marriage; instead, he wants to cohabitate with his current girlfriend. However, the author, Jane Doe, argued alongside her son that “living together out of wedlock can be economically impractical as well as socially awkward” (222) after her son and his girlfriend finally had a child. Doe believed it is socially awkward because she had trouble introducing her son’s girlfriend to her friends and family. Likewise, she continued to argue with her son that there are some consequences to consider if he is to cohabitate with his girlfriend.
