In The Great Gatsby we learn from memories and past accounts of Gatsbyś deep feelings of love for Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby is swayed by the idea of Daisy. He changes his entire life for the purpose of something from the past. Gatsby goes on a plot to reunite with his true love, or so he thinks. In this book many times Gatsby makes a drastic transformation of his life to achieve a feeling of past relations. We go to explore and make assumptions of the true feelings of each of these specific characters throughout the book. Also, regarding if the feelings are truly authentic towards each other. Gatsby and Daisy’s past go far back into the past. Gatsby first met Daisy in Louisville, her hometown, in nineteen seventeen when he was stationed there.
In “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Daisy struggles between her desire to be with someone she truly loves and her rational to be with someone who will give her social and financial stability. Ultimately, Daisy chooses Tom over Gatsby as he is the safer option once Gatsby is revealed to be untruthful, showing that she is predominately interested in a steady life.
The character of Jay Gatsby was a wealthy business man, who the author developed as arrogant and tasteless. Gatsby's love interest, Daisy Buchanan, was a subdued socialite who was married to the dim witted Tom Buchanan. She is the perfect example of how women of her level of society were supposed to act in her day. The circumstances surrounding Gatsby and Daisy's relationship kept them eternally apart. For Daisy to have been with Gatsby would have been forbidden, due to the fact that she was married. That very concept of their love being forbidden, also made it all the more intense, for the idea of having a prohibited love, like William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, made it all the more desirable. Gatsby was remembering back five years to when Daisy was not married and they were together:

In the novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Daisy Buchanan is unthinking and self-centered. Daisy is unthinking because when she meets Nick for the first time after the war; the first thing she says is “I’m p-paralyzed with happiness” (8) which is really unbecoming for a social butterfly like her. Moreover, she stutters while saying the word “paralyzed” which could imply that she says this without really thinking, because this is not the typical greeting one would say to their cousin, even after a long time. As the story continues, we soon learn that the romance behind Daisy and Gatsby first began in 1917. They had fallen in love when Gatsby was an officer, but their relationship was cut short when Gatsby was sent away to be a soldier overseas. He continued to write letters to her, but she had found someone else, a man by the name Tom Buchanan. She married him the following year for his money, but there was much difficulty getting her to the actual wedding. The day of, she received a letter from Gatsby, making her unsure of her marriage to Tom. But she went through with the marriage, and never thought of Gatsby again.

I think that when she first met him she probably did love him. He conveyed something to her that was the complete opposite of what she was: a poor soldier that did not have the social class that she possessed. But now her attitudes have changed and she is attracted to him because of his money and his apparent success.
Daisy never loved Gatsby the way he loved her. This is proven over and over throughout the course of their relationship. This is also a story about two men who are very different but they find common ground and become best friends. At last but not least, we can explore the life of Gatsby and how his life became to an abrupt end because he went after his dream with all he had and he wasn’t going to let anything get in the way of it.
The relationship between Gatsby and Daisy is one of constant lies, and deceit. Gatsby falls in love with Daisy before he goes to the Army as a young man, and Daisy fell in love with him too. Yet Daisy is very materialistic and Tom, a very rich man came into place and Daisy married him instead of waiting for Gatsby like she had promised. Gatsby waited for Daisy but she did not wait for him, and instead married Tom just for his money. This shows how there relationship has been riddled with lies since the very beginning of the story.
WIth him being Gatsby’s neighbor and Daisy’s second cousin once removed, it gives a valid reason to be involved within the lives of these two. Readers can conclude that there is a past romance lingering between Daisy and Gatsby based on her reaction when she briefly heard the word Gatsby. “You must know Gatsby” “Gatsby” Demanded Daisy. “What Gatsby?” (Page 11).
Gatsby’s love life has become surrounded by ideas from the past. No longer is he able to fall in love with the moment, but instead he is held up on what have and should have been. He spends his time reminiscing on old times and previous relationships while he has also been building up a new life in order to return to the past. The unreal expectations he has for Daisy prove to us that he has trouble letting go of his old romantic ideas. Gatsby doesn’t want to accept and love this new Daisy, and instead he is hoping for the Daisy he knows to come back. But people change and there can be no expectations for someone to continue to remain the same after a number of years. Instead we must let go of the past and embrace the future for everything it could be.
