Taking Student Success Seminar has allowed me to recognize my own capabilities and perspectives on issues of today’s society. Such issues and recognitions were covered in various areas; religion, leadership, personal growth, success, social issues, etc. While taking a FYS Economics course, I wrote an essay regarding DACA and its economics effects toward society. This particular topic reaches further into pre-existing matters than just economics itself. This form of administration puts individuals at risk and resides issues of racism and misconceptions of immigrants- a recurring aspect in society. Within Economics and SSS, it is encouraged to be well informed of the world and its events. Awareness allows us to have comprehension toward society, and while doing so, we as individuals are capable to have an opinion or voice on the matter. In a economic perspective, a person who doesn’t know what the roles of GDP, human capital, or taxes; would not be able to comprehend why DACA is not beneficial for the economy or society. One recurring perspective is “illegal aliens” reaping the benefits of the U.S. and “stealing jobs”. And by passing DACA, it will immediate this issue and society’s workforce will no longer be tainted by unwanted immigrants. In reality this misconstrued point of view is not all correct. DACA does not provide citizenship. There are, in fact, unquantifiable benefits from DACA; increased access to private health insurance, driver’s licenses, and auto insurance, all of which generate benefits to the rest of society (Schoen).
