Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS), sometimes referred to as an “abdominal migraine,” is a rare and unexplained disorder that is found in children and some adults (Gee, 1882). This disorder is characterized by bouts of vomiting that last from a few hours to several days (Bullard & Page, 2005). Cyclic vomiting syndrome is estimated to affect approximately two percent of children. Currently, researchers have been unable to determine what causes CVS, which is why it is known as a disease in disguise. Once confused with other gastrointestinal disorders, cyclic vomiting syndrome can be diagnosed using specific criteria instead of extensive confirmatory testing. Combining lifestyle changes, prevention strategies, and pharmacologic therapies, the clinician can treat the child debilitated by this condition and its Comorbidities and help to regain normal daily quality of life. When it comes to diagnosing someone with CVS, there are three essential diagnostic questions to make a tentative diagnosis of CVS: Has the child had five episodes of vomiting or at least three episodes over a six-month period? Does the child return to normal (or to base-line) health in between episodes? And, are the episodes similar in time of onset, duration and associated symptoms.
