All around the world, the internet is being used daily by kids. People in the United Kingdom can experience a complete conversation with a person in Utah with just a click of a button. A housewife can go online and search for an answer to almost any problem she has but she does not think of the dangers. Innocent people have been kidnapped and even killed by being researched through social networks. Anywhere a person is a threat can loom over them. Kids today spend most of their time on social networks, posting their life story on networks such as Instagram and Twitter. They do not see the pain that they can be exposed to; they think no one can hurt them on line. Cyberbullying, one of the newer forms of bullying that occurs through technology, has caused intense consequences for the unsuspecting victims.
Bullying has taken a modern turn with a new scene of the crime, cyberbullying. Cyberbullying has become increasingly more popular as our choices of internet networks increase. Verbal bullying is starting to sift with all the recent internet sources, making it easier for information to spread (McKellor-Kirchoff, 1). This new form is so rapidly expanding that the people trying to stop it cannot keep up to date with it (Campfield, 26). The abuse occurs through texts, Facebook posts, etc.; making it so no one sees it in person, making it harder to stop (“Cyberbullying Crackdown”, 1). Given that the internet is such a huge part of our daily life, like homework, entertainment, or a “social lifeline”, victims may find it hard to escape this type of abuse (Campfield, 28). Cyberbullying has become a bigger problem as our use of the internet has increased. People today can go online and post whatever “suits their fancy” with no one questioning them, the people just believing that it is true. Victims of cyberbullying can be targeted by a person they have and probably will never meet and go through such a huge set of emotional and psychological problems. The targeted can be affected for the rest of their life since it extends past the school or office. Cyberbullying breaks down the safety walls people build around their home with a press of a few keys. It can destroy their life with each blink of a little light.

As people start to really understand cyberbullying and the effects it has on the people that are affected by it and their families are affected by this array as well. Cyberbullying is not just a social thing it does immense pain and psychological difficulties for its victims. Especially leading to suicide in some cases. In her article “How the Internet Has Changed Bullying”, Maria Konnikova explained how bullying has reached technology, and in the workplaces of many adults. The Internet has made it harder to escape from bullying, and easier for bullies to escape from confronting their victims. Furthermore, the author stresses that cyberbullying not only targets high schoolers, but it’s affecting the lives of college students as well (Konnikova 1). Cyberbullying takes place in the Internet world where is easier for a bully to gossip and humiliate multiple of victims in a faster pace. The studies have shown that cyberbullying is making a greater impact in the victims’ and the bullies’ lives more than the traditional bullying and many people are not aware of it; therefore the schools, witnesses, and employers should work together to fight against cyberbullying and provide help to the victims and bullies.

An unfortunate student would normally get bullied at school with physical acts of violence, but as soon as that student arrives at his home he or she is presumed safe. This sort of phenomenon makes major headlines regularly in recent times and effects a clear majority of today’s youth. State and local lawmakers have taken steps to prevent this type of bullying by making illegal under several criminal law codes. Michele Hamm, a researcher in pediatrics explained, “There were consistent associations between exposure to cyberbullying and increased likelihood of depression.” Cyberbullying became widespread among students with the rapid growth in use of cellular devices and the Internet. With this kind of technology bullies have the ability to send harmful messages to their recipients at any given time. Adolescents in today’s society face a lot more conflict in their personal lives than more people aware of. Bullying has become a vast issue in some people’s lives. Bullying involves the negative and hurtful interaction between two people. One or both tear down self-esteem and self-confidence of the other. Each of these leaves a negative impact on people’s lives and can hurt them in the future. There are many different kinds of bullying, some being traditional bullying and cyber-bullying. In the earlier years, bullying was easily controlled because of the limitations of technology but now technology is growing at a rapid pace. Instead of the traditional face-to-face bullying, cyber-bullying is more common in today society due to this growth.
Because cyberbullying is a relatively new phenomenon, there is some degree of variance in its definition. In its early inception, cyberbullying was thought to be limited to the internet. However, the rapid creation of new technology tolls has expanded the boundaries to include cell phones, instant messaging, chat rooms, and email (Campfield, 2006). Violated. Trapped. Afraid. These are the feelings of young victims of cyber bullying. Bullying has metamorphosed into so much more than face-to-face interactions. Now, children cannot escape the torture when they leave social situations. The torment follows them home and has transformed into words laced with hatred and animosity. Behind computer screens, the oppressors may remain anonymous, creating fear of the unknown. Unnamed and unidentified, these online bullies can instill terror in the hearts of those being harassed. These types of bullies, via the Internet, tyrannize children that choose to remain indifferent, children who do not have the desire or will to fight back against them. These children that suffer severe bullying not only have to deal with a cruel social hierarchy in public, but now they are assaulted over any type of online media in the comfort of their own home. The Internet allows anonymity, and has led to a brutal breeding ground for cyber bullies to attack whomever they choose. With the increasing dependence and use of technology all over the world, cyber bullying is becoming a more important issue than it ever was before.

Internet usage in children and adolescents has been increasing in a steadily fashion in the past number of years and with the increase in internet usage, a new form of bullying has developed – Cyber bullying. Cyber bullying can be defined as “the electronic posting of mean-spirited messages about a person,” (Merriam-Webster, 2012). This form of bullying can come through various mediums including but not limited to text messages, emails, videos, and social networking sites. There is an overwhelming amount of information that defines cyber bullying, identifies the demographics of bullies and victims of cyber bullying, and identifies the outcomes of cyber bullying on victims. More focus needs to be placed on who the perpetrators of this form of violence are and how this form of violence is linked to traditional bullying. This will allow researchers and practitioners to move forward with research and implementation preventative methods and intervention once the problem has already occurred.

As a result, children have become victims of cyberbullying via social media. One of the major problem of cyberbullying had to do with the fact that “[t]he Internet provides more than ample opportunities for children to bully one another anonymously. Kids can embark on impressive and terrifying bullying campaigns, drawing in dozens of other completely anonymous children. Even a child who never does anything risky online is at risk of being bullied”, (Woda,2015, p.32). Children are expose to more cyberbullying in social media than in their normal everyday lives. According to Woda Tim, (2015) “a 2013 Pew Research Center study, indicates that 20.8 percent of kids ages eight to ten report that they have been cyberbullied at least once in their life, while 88 percent of social media-using teens say they have witnessed someone being mean or cruel on a social media site”, (32). Parents should focus more when their kids are using phones or computers in the house and it should use in public areas of the house, where parents can be aware of what their kids are doing in social media. Cyber bullying is a form of bullying that is done over electronic messaging or over social media. This is very new to many people of the older generation, but is very relevant to the new generation. Bullying has been around since the beginning of time.
