In today’s society the world is evolving and things are getting more complex. Due to this fact, school districts are having a challenging time updating the suitable and required code of conducts for the schools and students alike. The code of conducts are required to be updated more and more recently, because of the lack of protection towards the school and students. Rules in some district’s code of conducts do not have a suitable punishment for a student’s actions. For example, if the code of conduct is not updated or have rules for a certain action, the schools will not be able to do anything about what the student has done. So if someone were to cyber bully another student off campus and the victim came to the school for help, the school can not do anything without a suitable code of conduct. A lot of schools now a days, because the advancement in technology and social media are having cyberbullying issues and not knowing how to handle them due to the out dated code of conduct. Many schools are now in a difficult position of having to respond to a mandate to have a cyberbullying policy. This cyberbullying policy would contain information on how and when to take action in cyberbullying incidents so making a cyberbullying policy would update and strengthen the code of conduct and protecting them from lawsuits. Some parents try to sue schools for just standing by as students coerce the parents child on social media forcing the victim to commit suicide. Phoebe Prince was severely bullied on and off campus, both physically and cyberbullied. Phoebe Prince had faith in a guy and he basically used Pheobe so from that moment on she was bullied everyday at school getting pushed around, getting called a “slut” and a “hoe”, also getting hateful messages and people tweeting about her and posting inappropriate things about her while the school sat by and watched it all happen without doing nothing and the reason why was because the code of conduct had nothing about that issue and how to handle it. So Phoebe’s bullies had no consequences at all even though some individuals would say the bullies bullied Phoebe to death. Even after Phoebe committed suicide the bullies kept going and posting things about her, laughing at her death and someone even posted “mission accomplished”. Phoebe’s parents sued the school and won the case, thus the school finally updated the code of conduct so this type of thing doesn’t happen again to anyone at that school. Even after the lawsuit the bullies still didn’t receive any punishment at all. So the code of conducts consequences were also updated to benefit
Bullying has always been a worldwide issue faced in many schools, neighborhoods and public places. In the past, bullies targeted their victims by acting tough and intimidating in person. As our society advanced in technology, the types of bullying advanced as well. The creation of the internet and social media sites now allows bullies to now hide behind their computer screens to torment their victims. Social media negatively affects our society more than it benefits us because it has created cyberbullying. Cyberbullying has become a worsening issue in our society that is difficult to prevent. Schools need to establish a no tolerance policy towards cyberbullying and strictly enforce it too. A victim of cyberbullying needs to try and resolve the issue on their own first, before they talk to someone or get help. Students should have the privilege of talking to someone like a teacher, that they feel comfortable around and trust. Bullying has been around for a long time, but the negative influence that it has on society is becoming overbearing. Bullying can occur anywhere, from the workplace to the store, but its main host is the school compound. Bullying in school is a major concern, not just for Americans, but internationally. Cyberbullying is a very controversial matter. People are starting to say that cyberbullies should be prosecuted for their actions. First of all, there are more important crimes to focus on like murder and theft than just prosecuting a kid who said something “offensive” to another kid. Also, the First Amendment protects cyberbullies to have freedom of speech and say stuff to other kids. To add on, just because someone “excludes” another kid form not joining a group, does not mean that they should be criminally prosecuted. Sarah is an average teenage girl. She gets decent grades, likes to hang out with friends and is on the track team. One day when Sarah arrives at school she notices other kids staring at her and whispering, but she doesn’t think too much of it. Later in the day at lunch a few kids mutter nasty words at her as they pass by, kids she doesn’t even know. After school she turns on her cell phone and see 15 text messages from numbers she doesn’t know, all of them calling her horrible names like “skank” and “bitch.” Once she is home Sarah checks her e-mail to find messages like the ones on her phone, but one of them has a link. After clicking on the link Sarah is directed to a web site, and it appears to be all about her. Photo collages with unflattering pictures cover the page, and a bulletin board with hundreds of postings calling her nasty names, each one more malicious and hurtful than the last. After months of this Sarah can’t take it anymore, nowhere is safe, and she decides to end her life by taking pills from her mom’s medicine cabinet.

From countless TV shows and movies, we have learned that if you behave inappropriately in schools, these are the options for punishment. However, Ontario schools have expanded their take on punishment to try to create an approach that will support both victims and perpetrators, without impeding the educational development of either student (Ontario Ministry of Education 2012). The bullying and harassment that occurs between these students should not only be up to the parents to deal with, but also up to the school districts. Afterall, parents expect that the students are partially under the school’s protection and responsibility. When the bullying continues outside of school, and personal information is exposed for others to see on social media, it is still up to the district to set the consequences for its students. Because most cases of cyberbullying start at schools, it is nearly impossible for students to avoid the bullies’ torment throughout the day. As for the consequences, a school district’s Code of Conduct must also consider the former record of these bullies and anyone else who is involved. The severity of each student’s punishment shall be partially determined by his or her history of previous misbehavior or faulty actions. In a digital pile on for example, a student may only post a small comment in agreement with a previous post but will still receive the minimal of a written referral and a phone call home, letting the parents know why such measures had to be taken. If the reported bully continues to bother the victim, whether it is in person or through social media services, the consequences will be more harsh for each known violation until expulsion is the only answer. Student code of conducts are used to serve inside of school and outside for every individual. Code of conduct is just an enforcement to establish rules just as a violation for example bringing weapons to school or any dangerous objects inside of school. Code of conduct in schools are rights for students and faculty to follow and obey, listing many different types of severity and what discipline should be given. Schools often have to update the code of conduct because in many cases the school is the one to always lose. Cyberbullying can sometimes become more harmful than verbal, physical, and emotional bullying due to victims, not feeling like they have an escape route because they are threatened repeatedly through text messages, e-mails, social media, etc. The worst part about cyberbullying is that the things posted can be anonymous; therefore, there is no blame for who posts what. A victim can suspect that someone is to blame for the actions done, but there is no proof to solve a possible ongoing issue. Cyberbullying and bullying are actually considered a crime when someone: physically assaults another person, gender or racism is talked about, violent or deadly threats are made, sexually texting, inappropriate photos, stalking,
