Technology has vastly improved and the importance of the internet has increased out of sight which has caused many issues that weren’t present twenty years ago but are now extremely significant. One such issue is the problem of Cyber Crime which has recently reared its ugly head in Australia with the ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ case. Rates of Cyber Crime and its control have been of a strong focus of law enforcement authorities in Australia and this has been reflected in their success at preventing and reducing these types of crimes. The Australian Government needs to implement stronger penalties to Australians who regularly download illegal content from the internet.

Australia is the worst pirate of many new release TV shows and movies and torrenting sites such as Pirate Bay are widely used by the Australian public. The Commonwealth Government passed The Cybercrime Act 2001 (Cth) which deals with our regularly evolving and improving internet. Crimes such as Identity theft and phishing and pharming have also become serious issues that the Australian Government has to deal with however this essay will focus purely on pirating illegal content …show more content…

The ‘three strike’ policy sends repeat infringers warning letter and after receiving three warnings in a year they can be pursued by copyright owners. This policy comes after copyright owners of the movie ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ sued six small Australian internet providers and demanded the names and addresses of their uses who it alleged shared the film illegally. It was ruled that the internet provides weren’t liable for their users infringements so the copyright owners of the movie tracked the accounts of Australian users who uploaded the film. A total of 4700 Australians were caught out and this decision overturned previous cases that kept infringers’ identities
