Between 2007 and 2008 an apparent alteration occurred to increase the apparent protein content by an addition of melamine. 2007, US manufacturers found that their products had been contaminated with melamine and caused serious illness or death in some pets. Reports had showed a finding of melamine in pet food samples of granular wheat gluten, imported from a single source in China. Melamine was found in crystalline form in the kidneys and urine of affected animals. In September 2008, several milk companies in China were involved in a milk powder and infant formula scandal, which had been adulterated by an addition of melamine. Records show that by September 2008, nearly 53,000 young children had become ill, with more than 12,800 hospitalisations …show more content…

Known to be non-toxic when in small doses but if combined with cyanuric acid fatal kidney stones can be formed. (Dr Wilson, 2012) It is a nitrogen-based compound, which is used, in industrial and commercial plastics known as eating utensils, laminate, Formica bench tops and flooring. (Swaminathan, 2008) between the period of 2007 and 2008, melamine was added illegally to production of food substances all because of the need for the protein content to increase. It was before this, that a nonspecific procedure was being used but could not determine the difference between melamine and real protein. This procedure was called Kjeldahl reaction. Known to play a crucial role in nearly every single biological processes, amino acids is what we know as the building blocks of it all. (What are Amino Acids?, 2014) Proteins consist of amino acids, which when it comes to food products such as baby formula are a major aspect. This is all because they are a main factor, which contributes to the growth of muscles and rehabilitating cells. (Genetics, What are proteins and what do they do?, 2013) Also known to be biologically important organic compounds, made up of amine (-NH2) and carboxylic acid (-COOH) functional groups. (Amino Acids, 2014) When you look at Melamine and amino acids, both of these substance and acid contains nitrogen. Amino acids gets its nitrogen from one of its compounds, amine. Amine is known to contain a basic nitrogen atom with a lone pair (refer to figure 2). All because of the nitrogen present, melamine was added to food
