Albania, which is officially known as the Republic of Albania, is one of the countries located in the Balkans and, more specifically, at the south-east of the peninsula; the Adriatic Sea also bounds the country on the west. While it is rightly believed that the Balkans is a knot where the civilizations of East and West had crossed, firstly it is a reference to Albania due to its convenient sea harbors and location on the trade routes from the sea deep into the peninsula. As a result, Albania and its people have experienced colonization, wars, endless changes of administrative boundaries (that did not coincide with ethnic metes) and political struggles.

Naturally, in consequence of the long history, Albania’s culture was influenced by the ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Slavs (mainly Serbs) as it can be seen in the iconography and architecture. In the Middle Ages Albanian culture was under strong Turkish influence, which is understandable, as the area was part of the Ottoman Empire during this time. In paintings, mosaics and frescoes the obvious influence of Islam is traced.
In addition, during the Middle Ages the Albanian culture was appreciably affected by the Italians (for instance, Venice laid its claims on some Albanian cities), who have been considered the territory of modern Albania their «patrimony» for a long time. Today, modern fashion is largely set on Italy, which is evident in both everyday clothes and official clothes.
On the whole, cultural life of Albania can be described as active. Various folk cultural events, opera and theater performances are held in many cities. Though all Albanians possess hospitality, diligence, tolerance, it should be noted that within little Albania (that is of 28 thousand square kilometers), cultural traditions and customs are diverse in different parts of the country.
