In years past, the bullying issue was quite different from today because the various stakeholders, including victims and their families, teachers, and the school administration had few places to get help with kid-to-kid harassment (Allanson, Lester, Notar, 2015). In the 1970s and 1980s, there was little contact between teachers and parents and schools did not put anything in place to prevent bullying (Allanson, Lester, Notar, 2015). Today, with technology, it is much easier to get and stay in contact with parents on a regular basis as well as immediately after issues occur.

There are a number of stakeholders impacted when one kid harasses another child or teenager. The first stakeholder is, of course, are bullied students. Bullied kids often start to feel disconnected and learn to dislike school. They may even disconnect from friends, fail at school, and not want to go back. Students who usually excel academically may even fail. In extreme cases, tormented students even have thoughts of suicide. The second stakeholder that is affected by bullying is the parents themselves. The parents are affected because they are afraid to send their frightened kids to school, and even their victims’ home life is changed. Parents feel compelled to confront the school principal about what he or she can do to stop this from happening again. Parental action brings in another stakeholder: the school administration. Teachers and school staff are affected because they are required to create and maintain a safe student environment. This stakeholder group must train teachers and staff on any past and new school policies on bullying, as well as the proper way to create a safe and respectful classroom environment.
These three stakeholders are all drastically affected by bullying. Parents, teachers and administrators are focused on how they can stop it. Bullied kids often work harder at including other students that are not accepted by the other people around them. They also question the value of trying to fit into the mainstream group. Parents of maltreated kids fit into the Cultural Competence stage because they are also more sensitive to the trouble faced by bullied kids. They tend to encourage their children to value and accept the diversity in other people. Teachers, who receive special training on cultural awareness, are in the Cultural Proficiency Stage because they trained to promote cultural diversity acceptance and can detect abnormal situations.
