The impact of the crusades
The crusaders were groups of Christian knights that wanted to get the Holy Land back by fighting against the Muslims in Jerusalem. But while they were doing that, they also put a lot of influences into medieval Europe. There were literally hundreds of crusaders, but the most important ones are the first eight groups of crusaders. They went all over Europe to try to get their holy land back. While they were in the progress of getting their land back, they also helped the people and the government with their problems. After a period of time, the Crusades impacted medieval Europe by weakening the feudal structure, expanding the commercial activity and strengthening the leadership of kings.
During the two centuries that crusaders existed, they kept Europe in chaos at all times (Alchin). They lost several million lives in Christendom. Aside from that, the crusades also cost a huge amount in treasure, and human suffering. However, the Holy War that the crusaders started created very important influences in the history of civilization’s progress. There are many effects that the crusades had, such as: effects on feudalism, social development and politics.
The biggest effect that the crusaders had to medieval Europe are on feudalism. They helped to weaken the feudalism in Europe. At the time that the barons and the knights heard about the crusades, they started to raise money for their crusading expedition by selling their lands one after another. But most of them failed the journey half way, especially in their own town and Syria, they returned to the knights and the barons. The crusades effected the commercial activity as well. After the crusades failed their journey, the Christians start heading to Jerusalem, and on their way to Jerusalem they started looting, some of them even started to steal stuff. After a period of time, people realized that trading is actually better than looting stuff. Because at first looting is dangerous, and second, trading is easier to do and it does not cost a lot of money.
The Crusades impacted medieval Europe by weakening the feudal structure, expanding the commercial activity and strengthening the leadership of kings. In conclusion, they weaken the feudal structure by giving king, knights and barons more authority, They expanded the commercial activity by impact the trading process, and they strengthening the leadership of the king by strengthen the political and enlarge the power of Papacy.
