The poignant novel, Crow Lake, is written by Canadian author, Mary Lawson. The novel is narrated by Kate Morrison, who is the second child in the Morrison family. Seven-year-old Kate, her one and half year old sister, Bo, and her two older brothers Luke and Matt, are left orphans after their parents die in a car accident. Kate Morrison shares her past and present interactions with her siblings, as she is now an adult. From the beginning of the novel, the author illustrates that there will be conflict in Kate and Matt’s relationship, since in the prologue, Kate says, “what took place between Matt and me can’t be explained.” (Pg. 3) The novel shows that siblings are closer with each other when they are younger. Also, when Matt and Kate are talking with each other, it is strained and they are unsure of what to say to each other. As Matt and Kate are talking, Kate narrates, “I had never loved anyone as I loved Matt, But now, when we saw each other, there was something unbridgeable between us, and we had nothing to say.” (Pg. 241) When siblings have a weak relationship it is hard to converse with each other, which is what is happening with Matt and Kate. Finally, when Kate is returning home for Matt’s son’s birthday celebration, Matt becomes nervous to see her again. While talking about Matt, his wife, Marie, shares with Kate, “If you could see him when he knows you`re coming home…at first he’s so happy… but then as it gets closer, he doesn’t sleep.” (Pg. 279) Kate’s opinion matters very much to Matt and seeing her after an absence causes him anxiety.
