Applied Learning Paper: Final Exam
My definition of critical thinking is to become self-aware of one’s own thoughts. Uphold standards that allow one to listen without judgment, rationally prepare thoughts before speaking, and empathically respond to any of the audience’s concerns. I believe critical thinking is a skill set that advances through practice and routine. My experience with PHI 301: Critical Thinking has improved my communication on a personal and professional level. The class has also enhanced my critical thinking dialog by way of writing to my fellow classmates.

My personal score was a six. Today, I feel I have grown exponentially because I had an understanding of critical thinking prior to class. However, the class gave me the opportunity to expand on my existing critical thinking skills. I would rate myself to be eight and a half by the end of the semester. I believe this skill set takes a lifetime to master. Therefore, my personal score will need continual practice to achieve a ten. Professionally, I rated myself to be an eight and I would keep myself at the same number. My career as a surgical technician has trained me to think and process how other people may react to situations. Surgeons can have tremendous egos, and I find it is best to speak to them frankly and with purpose during an operation. My co-workers and I have built a line of supportive communication, which allows everyone to feel validated. We furthermore give each other praise and express gratitude for participating teamwork. The patient is the most important person in the operating room. I have always introduced myself to the patient, as well as holding a hand to provide comfort and to reduce anxiety. In the textbook, it mentioned “spacing out” as a form of wasted time. I found this interesting because I learned “spacing out” to be a form of meditation, which demonstrated higher intelligence. I am mindful of my time now, and I prioritize better today. I acknowledge this modification in my behavior is due to my improved critical thinking exercises.
