Applied Learning Paper: Final Exam
My definition of critical thinking is to become self-aware of one’s own thoughts. Uphold standards that allow one to listen without judgment, rationally prepare thoughts before speaking, and empathically respond to any of the audience’s concerns. I believe critical thinking is a skill set that advances through practice and routine. My experience with PHI 301: Critical Thinking has improved my communication on a personal and professional level. The class has also enhanced my critical thinking dialog by way of writing to my fellow classmates.
The first-week video introduction presented by Dr. Joe Moravec, he stated, “Critical Thinking will be a life-changing class.” I agree with this statement after fifteen

My personal score was a six. Today, I feel I have grown exponentially because I had an understanding of critical thinking prior to class. However, the class gave me the opportunity to expand on my existing critical thinking skills. I would rate myself to be eight and a half by the end of the semester. I believe this skill set takes a lifetime to master. Therefore, my personal score will need continual practice to achieve a ten. Professionally, I rated myself to be an eight and I would keep myself at the same number. My career as a surgical technician has trained me to think and process how other people may react to situations. Surgeons can have tremendous egos, and I find it is best to speak to them frankly and with purpose during an operation. My co-workers and I have built a line of supportive communication, which allows everyone to feel validated. We furthermore give each other praise and express gratitude for participating teamwork. The patient is the most important person in the operating room. I have always introduced myself to the patient, as well as holding a hand to provide comfort and to reduce anxiety. My golden rule for patient care is to place myself in their …show more content…
In the textbook, it mentioned “spacing out” as a form of wasted time. I found this interesting because I learned “spacing out” to be a form of meditation, which demonstrated higher intelligence. I am mindful of my time now, and I prioritize better today. I acknowledge this modification in my behavior is due to my improved critical thinking exercises. I credit the self-help strategies of critical thinking to be life altering and beneficial. I appreciate the fortuity to learn these skills at a collegiate
The article, “Critical Thinking? You Need Knowledge” by Diane Ravitch, discusses how in the past people have been deprived from the thinking process and abstract thinking skills. Students need to be given more retainable knowledge by their teachers to improve their critical thinking skills. (Ravitch).
The Critical Thinking Community defines critical thinking as, “the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication,

The author Vincent Ruggiero defines critical thinking in his book Beyond Feelings: A Guide to Critical Thinking, as a “search for answers, a quest.” It is the idea that one does not accept claims, ideas, and arguments blindly, but questions and researches these things before making a decision on them. From what I learned in class, critical thinking is the concept of accepting that there are other people and cultures in this world that may have different opinions. It is being able to react rationally to these different opinions.
Critical thinking provides an opportunity to explore the positive and negative sides of an argument for and against an idea, theory or notion. Reasoning and perception is attuned to personal impression and provides outcome to belief and opinion.

For example, a teacher could perfectly pass on the necessary knowledge to a student to pass a test and advance to the next level or class. But if that same teacher could nurture critical thinking skills to that same student, she would be giving his a true education that he will carry forever. Memorizing facts is a great skill, don’t get the wrong idea, but this skill has a limit to short-term time spans if the knowledge is not used constantly. With critical thinking this is not the case. An individual will be able to assess the validity of the information provide or that he has gathered and apply this information to solve any problem given. This will allow you to process information and take more logical decision. “A person with critical thinking skills is capable of upgrading his own knowledge and can easily engage in independent self-learning. He can find connections between diverse streams and pieces of knowledge and can assess the value of the information he acquires.” 1 This tells us that an individual with critical thinking skills is capable of judging to a certain extend what fragments of information he needs without being distracted by whatever information he will not find useful. With critical thinking, an individual and improve himself time and time
Questions are something that must be asked and can be very important when reading a literary work, watching a movie, or just simply trying to understand the habits of people today. Asking questions opens up the human brain to dig farther and deeper into the meaning of why someone did something in a specific way and what purpose it has that something must be done in that way. Critical thinking is asking question and trying to hypothesize on what the answer to that question might be. Critically thinking is a healthy aspect of opening up the brain and will improve one’s thought process on how to apply critical thinking in situations where it is dependent, like a future
While the semester is over and the deadline has expired, I thought I would write this to express my true intended thoughts.
It’s been fifteen weeks since the beginning of the semester when we were given our first critical thinking essay. Have our thoughts about critical thinking changed or remained the same throughout this semester? The idea of critical thinking has been changed for me, there is a lot more you can do with critical thinking. Critical thinking means being able to find a routine to build up your way around the barrier. It involves planning, time, and commitment. During this semester, I’ve been using planning. Without planning, you would be able to manage your time which is the secondary thing towards critical thinking. Once you done those two, you can now commit to your objectives.
Critical thinking is a significant and essential topic in recent education. The strategy of critical thinking skills helps identify areas in one's courses as the suitable place to highlight, expand and use some problems in exams that test students' critical thinking skills.
Paul R. (1995). Critical thinking: How to prepare students for a rapidly changing world. Santa Rosa, CA: Foundation for Critical Thinking.
Critical thinking is the careful scrutiny of what is stated as true or what appears to be true and the resulting expression of an opinion or conclusion based on that scrutiny, and (2) the creative formulation of an opinion or conclusion when presented with a question, problem or issue, (Kist-Ashman, 2011, p. 33).
What is not easily recognized is the fact that the very fabric of life is dependent on the ability to think properly and make good decisions. Improper thinking is costly in the quality of life and monetarily. The result of a critical thinker that has worked to cultivate proper thinking skills includes: the ability to ask vital questions and to identify problems with clarity. A critical thinker also collects relevant information while effectively interpreting it, thinks with an open mind, uses alternative systems of thought, and understands how to communicate while working to formulate a strong solution. In summary, critical thinking is self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking. Above all else, the standards of excellence are rigorous, and it entails the prospect of overcoming the challenge of sociocentrism and
According to The Foundation for Critical Thinking (2007), "Critical thinking is, in short, self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking. It presupposes assent to rigorous standards of excellence and mindful command of their use. It entails effective communication and problem solving abilities and a commitment to overcome our native egocentrism (Foundation for Critical Thinking, 2007).
