In his essay ‘Is Google Making Us Stupid?’, Nicholas Carr investigates the effect of the Net on the cognition of its users and promotes its negative impact more than its advantage to human life, particularly the human mind. The realization of his, and then subsequently his colleagues’ adoption of a lazy attitude toward reading is what seemingly prompted him to write this paper. His usage of literary techniques and critical evaluations of statements about his subject greatly outweigh his few but important ungrounded assumptions.
To start with, the author has good techniques in presenting his argument. He begins his essay with a passage of a science-fiction novel focusing on the relationship of a man and a computer and ends his text by referring to this story in order to make his argument more memorable by his readers. The breakdown of his work into a number of short, yet concise paragraphs, with summaries usually written in figurative style helps the reader associate the ideas presented. What improves his credibility even more is his assertion, numerous times throughout the text, that there is still no solid, scientific demonstration of how exactly, or even if the Net actually changes the cognition of a person. Another technique he uses is the assertion that he might be wrong about his claim by using historical evidence for example when Carr (2008) evaluates the possibility that his skeptics might be right and that the internet will lead to more wisdom just as the printing press did and then says that the internet is a different kind of source of knowledge not leading to wisdom in the same way printed books do.
