Sociological and criminological imaginations are alike in many ways but also share many indifferences. When one thinks of criminological, crime comes to your mind whereas sociological involves an individual’s social skills, involvement with people, the community, and so on comes to mind. The truth is Criminology is the investigation of crime and punishment whereas sociology involves a persons thoughts. According to C. Wright Mills, the sociological imagination is when an individual blames society if life deals him a bad hand. People many times try to connect their problems to society or find something in society to blame it on. Criminology relates to the work of sociologist in many ways regarding theoretical and research work that has been done on causes of criminality and the organization of criminal justice agencies and processes has been carried on by sociologists, who are referred to as Criminologists. A criminologist looks at criminal activity mostly from a social point of view. Sociological concepts and skills are often used to make criminology reports. The study of crime have influenced the sociological outlook on crime, and helping criminals to do better. Studies have showed that criminality is basically a social product. As Durkheim stated “we do not disapprove of an action because it is crime, but it is a crime because society disapproves of it.” As there are many similarities there are also many differences that sociological and criminological imaginations have. The relationship between social harm and criminology has been discussed all around the world within different approaches. Some criminologists such as Hillyard and Tombs, believe to be a better alternative to the concept of crime, due to the fact that involves a lack of more harmful issues that go unpunished in our society, others disagree saying that, actions can only be penalized within communities if they are seen as a crime. However, crime is looked at differently within societies, social groups, and nation states, as a result of distinct cultures and beliefs.

Sociological theories are like most other theories, they are selective, and there is no quantity of theory to explain everything or define the infinite amount of information that exist or comprehend the methods of observing reality. Sociological theories vary and can be linked to each other according to various criteria. The two main perspectives of sociology are the micro sociological approach and the macro sociological approach. The micro sociological approach is based more on the persons being capable of their own independent thoughts feelings and behaviour; therefor society is built through their interactions amongst each other and the significances they attach to them. This approach is defined using Social Action Theory and Symbolic Interactionism. The Macro Sociological approach is on a much bigger scale and consists of a person being born into a current society which will then shape their behaviour. It centres on the organisations, values and the culture of that particular society and how it impacts an individual and their role in life. This approach is made clearer using Functionalism, Feminist and Conflict Theories.
Criminology is the scientific study of the causes and prevention of crimes. Criminology also uses a vast amount of theories to explain peoples’ actions, mental state, and their drive for committing crimes. Some crimes have monetary benefits, while other crime are committed in revenge or in spite of another, which would be called crimes of passion. Because it can be sometime difficult to understand why certain crime are committed, the only thing we can do is use theories to better decipher thoughts, morals, and reasons behind committing crimes.

Even though these theories have added to societies understanding of criminal behaviour, all have been unable to explain why punishment or treatment of offenders is unable to prevent deviancy, and thus are ineffective methods of control. It is also a study that is constantly changing due to the people in our society, which political, economic and spiritual views of individuals come into consideration. Robert Agnew, an important man to the world of criminology, he was born on December first, in 1953, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Agnew fortunately is still living, and ages sixty years of age. He Attended Rutgers College, a school in New Jersey, where he received his Bachelors of Arts in sociology, although both his Masters and PhD in sociology he obtained in University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Sociology being the study of the functioning of human society. Agnew discovered his passion for teaching after her worked as a teacher’s assistant and served as Associate Editor to Social Forces Journal for a couple years. Agnew started teaching at Emory University, the courses he taught varied from criminology to the introduction of sociology. In addition to teaching, Robert Agnew wrote many books and articles about either criminology or sociology. To start of the first short essay I will start to compare and contrast the criminological theory that evaluates six differences between Radical and Orthodox. “Radical criminology is defined as a method that has been described of the meaning of the effects of the behavior of the individual that may or may not resolve in criminal behavior due to the effect of social identities”(Lynch &Michalowski,p.26). “Radical criminology has the various effects of economic influence that may possibly lead to an increase of crime such as property crimes due to the fact individuals are seeking to invest money”(Lynch & Michalowski, p.109).

That makes it more a form of sociology than a law enforcement tool. But the trends it studies have a huge impact on the way the police do their jobs, the way society treats its criminals, and the way a given community goes about maintaining law and order.
