Because of the sheer power of death and the impact it has on the lives of loved ones, people’s actions can potentially change, and suddenly be filled with passion for their late loved one. This is most definitely the case with Antigone after one of her brother’s deaths in Thebes. The idea of Polyneices not getting a proper burial was unfathomable to Antigone, as he was her brother, and she felt as if he should be treated in the same manner as other deceased individuals. Thus, since Antigone abides by principal, her primary motivation to bury Polyneices is to provide him with a traditional commemoration of life, like Antigone believes everyone deserves and like religious obligation dictates. Consequently, that is why she did not want to be a powerful feminine force like Antigone, and join in the efforts to honor Polyneices. Ismene’s sex is what is holding her back, but for Antigone, she does not see that as a barrier--that in essence is the key difference between them. Creon’s power in Thebes is inhibiting to Ismene; the idea that she may lose her life for standing up for what she thinks is right is overpowering, leading her to refrain. Despite Antigone’s female nature, she will not let any societal conformity prevent her from doing what she believes to be morally right. Ergo, the difference between to the two women lies in the way they view society and the power it has over them; Ismene is a greater conformer to societal rules than Antigone. Furthermore, the distinction between prudence and principle also influences Antigone and Ismene’s actions. Ismene seemingly wants to ensure her safety at all possible times. Thus, her actions are dictated by prudence--whatever seems to be the safest, wisest route, is the way Ismene will go. On the contrary, Antigone is guided by principle--in this case, the proper burial of her beloved brother. Though it may not be the wisest idea to go against Creon, Antigone is tenacious in her actions, and will not be confined by
