To Be or Not to Be I pretty much felt like an outcast when I began high school. Most of my classmates still had their friends from middle school, whereas mine went to the neighboring high school. Having social anxiety really didn’t help me either. It was hard for me to make eye contact with others or even bother to introduce myself to new people. In the first few weeks of high school, something had caught my eye. There were flyers advertising auditions for ‘The Little Mermaid’ production. Taking the risk, I decided to audition. There were make-up stains on the countertops along with trash on the floor. Quite often expensive costumes and personal belongings were strewn about. A few others would stay after the show with me to help clean up. The abundance of lost items in the dressing rooms sparked my interest to create a “Lost and Found” area. The director told me she appreciated my dedication to keeping things neat and organized. When our Sunday show awards ceremony rolled around, I watched the same people accept awards again, thinking I would not receive one. To my surprise, I received a ribbon and an invitation to be a Student Director for the remainder of high school. For the rest of ‘The Great Gatsby’ and throughout our spring show ‘Legally Blonde’, I worked hand in hand with our director and choreographer. I was with my fellow actors from 3:30pm to sometimes as late as 10pm. We would eat dinner together, talk with each other and do our homework. The experience of working as a team (similar to being in a close-knit family) gave me a sense of belonging and acceptance while striving to put on a spectacular production. I finally found my niche. The drama department was a place where I could be myself without feeling judged by others. For ‘Legally Blonde’ they used my design on the billboards, t-shirts and programs. Themes of hope, success, and wealth overpower The Great Gatsby, leaving the reader with a new way to look at the roaring twenties, showing that not everything was good in this era. F. Scott Fitzgerald creates the characters in this book to live and recreate past memories and relationships. This was evident with Gatsby and Daisy’s relationship, Tom and Daisy’s struggling marriage, and Gatsby expecting so much of Daisy and wanting her to be the person she once was. The theme of this novel is to acknowledge the past, but do not recreate and live in the past because then you will not be living in the present, taking advantage of new opportunities.

On the way to the Gatsby Mansion I could already hear the raging party. When we arrived our driver had to almost yell to tell use to disembark. When I entered the glorious mansion the first thing I noticed was the vastness and the magnificent chandeliers that were hanging above. All of the guest at the party were clean cut and looked dapper. Once we were inside I informed my “posse” to disperse and to meet at the car at 2am sharp. My “posse” was made up of FBI employees who had been assigned to work this undercover operation with me. The Roaring Twenties is considered to be a time of excessive celebration and immense corruption. The novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a criticism of American society and its values during this era of history. This criticism is first apparent in the people who go to Gatsby's parties. They get absurdly drunk, do not know who their host is and are rude by excessively gossiping about him. This commentary is also shown in the corruption of the police. Gatsby is able to pay off the police so that the activities going on at his home will go unnoticed and so that he may behave as he wishes. This criticism is finally shown in the corruption of friendship and love, the simple fact being that there is none. People use Gatsby and then throw him away. Fitzgerald's criticism of American society and its values during this time period is first shown in the behaviour of people at Gatsby's parties.
The Great Gatsby is a novel about the failed relationship of an idealist man. The Great Gatsby would be considered a modernist novel, because of its many elements that could be said to be modernist ideas. Modernism broke away from past romanticized ideas because of their disillusionment after World War 1, some of the ways broke away are: rejection of romanticized views, individual perception of situations, and fragmented story order (Martell 61). The characters themselves demonstrate most of these elements. Particularly Gatsby’s obsessive love for Daisy, his loss of connection with the reality of the situation, and Tom and Daisy’s destruction of his life. These matters display certain elements of modernism (Pidgeon). As well as the reader’s look through Nick’s perception of the world, seeing the story through his opinions instead of an all knowing narrator (Barrett). Not to mention modernism can also be found in the meaning of the book itself with its expression of how the culture cannot handle the outdated notion of romantic wonder (Martel 58).
