Deer Hassa, I don’t know if you’ll be able to read this, but it’s worth a try. Maybe if you can’t, you’ll be able to get someone to read it to you. I wanted to write you to tell you about what’s happening in my life sense Baba and I left Afghanistan. I have made up my mind and I’m going to go to college for english well creative writing to be exact. I’m excited to learn, but Baba wasn’t as happy about my choice at first. I think he’s warmed up to my idea though and has accepted my choice. Hopefully I’m good enough and people will take notice so I can support Baba with the money I will make. His smoking is going to kill him. He has cancer in his lungs and he doesn’t want to get any help. I have no clue how I’m going to live without him here.

Located in the popular Yosemite National Park, Yosemite Falls is the tallest waterfall in California. Every year, mother nature’s breathtaking beauty attracts millions of people from around the world. People hike for three long and fatiguing hours in anticipation of witnessing forceful water rushing down the steep mountain from 2,425 feet above. Last summer, my family and I backpacked through the Yosemite Falls Trail and I came to learn what a truly exhausting experience it is.
I have been interested in many subjects through my years in high school; though many of my fascinations have died out over time I still respect and love English. Half of my family is built on poets and story writers, so when I announced my curiosity about this subject they jumped at the opportunity and fed me the idea of being an English major. No one on either side of my family has either: never attended college or never finished. I have many plans on being the first woman in my family to go and graduate at a university or college.
It was August of 1819 in Mississippi. Men were harvesting corn and beans. The smell of the Choctaw own acorn bread filled the air. All the children were prancing about, playing with friends, shooting squirrels with their little toy bows, and wrestling for the last bite of jerky. All but one child. Once upon a time deep in a large forest there lived a woodchopper, his wife, and their two children, Hansel and Gretel. It was a beautiful forest, full of trees, flowers and butterflies and streams. Matter of fact, the family had everything they could ever want except for one little thing.
I arrive home around 11:00 p.m. to a sleeping wife and child. I walked into my daughter Emily’s nursery to give her a kiss goodnight. I leaned in and placed my lips on her forehead as she lightly opened her eyes. I rubbed her back and sang softly to put her back to sleep.

I make my way through the woods; I am familiar with my path that I don’t even mind that the towering trees have blocked out the sunlight from seeping in. I know exactly where I am going. The trees are endless and lost in the sky above. An outsider would have been lost here for days. I walk on through until the towering trees stop being menacing and the sunlight becomes more and more apparent with each step. The sky above is no longer shards of indecipherable green leaves but the soft and inviting blue of the cloudless sky. I am now in the light completely, the sunbeams washing over me. I just need to walk another mile to reach my destination.

I grew up on the waterfront of the Columbia River. The quaint, picturesque town of Kalama Washington was my hometown from before I can remember. The damp small town emulated a coastal environment, complete with heavy rainfall and dim daytimes. Tired, worn down buildings clad in paint chipped walls and climbing ivy dot the streets and hills. Scenic post-card worthy views of the river stretch out before wide front windows. Tourists stampede through musty antique shops and 50’s themed diners, breathing in the retro town in all its vintage glory; only to discard its significance once entering the freeway.
