Earth - 2256
I’m running late again. This time for sure Chief Bisbee is going to reboot my ass or worse. I know that the moment I walk through those precinct doors he’s going to yell, “Detective AI Franklin in my office now!” The Chief sounds mighty unhappy. He only uses my full name and title when I royally screw up. This really doesn’t happen as often as you might think. At least that’s what I keep telling myself.
“Yes Chief Bisbee, how did I screw up this time?”
“Franklin, you’ve done nothing to piss me off, yet. This is coming from the higher-ups who want a very old unsolved case closed. And I just want them off my back, capeesh.” When the Chief gets angry, his face turns redder than a baboon’s ass, or is it the other way around? “But Chief, I already have sixty unsolved murders on my desk.” The Chief now has a shit eating grin on his face. Should I worry?

From there on the name kind of stuck. Perfection is roughly 4.3 light years from Earth, that makes this a twenty-year jaunt across the galaxy. Good thing Friday and me don’t sleep or eat or breathe or have a life. I’m starting to think now that Chief Bisbee assigned me to this case just to get me as far away from him as possible.

In 2005 NYPD Detective, first grade, James E. Griffith called internal affairs to report he was being pressured by a fellow officer to lie and take the blame during an internal inquiry for the mishandling of a homicide investigation by his unit (Goldstein, 2012). Another detective and union official claimed in his deposition that Griffin was a rat because he went to internal affairs instead of the union (Marzulli, 2013). According to the United States District Court Eastern District of New York’s memorandum of decision the retaliation was immediate, included adverse personnel actions and continued though out his career in different units until Detective Griffith was effectively forced to retire due to the harassment in 2009 (James Griffin v. the City of New York, n.d.). Griffin eventually filed a legal sit against The City of New York, the NYPD and two of the officers involved individually. This case study will analyze the incident, whistleblower laws and the ethical challenges involved.
O’Connor himself wasn’t partially physically intimidating. This fact became abundantly clear once he stepped off his chair and approached me. While not necessarily short in stature, his seat gave him an extra few inches compared to his natural stance.
Brian Riviera was sitting at his desk, feet propped up on the table, taking long, slow sips of his coffee. As a now four year police detective, he was treated with respect. Along with that respect came the horrible burden of paperwork, which he was having to fill out during overtime at 10:30 on a Friday night. Chief Fortier’s execution of management created disharmony within the department from the onset of his administration. Understanding that the department was loosely managed with “a hands-off approach, preferring to leave matters to the officers and detectives themselves with an appeal to their sense of professional integrity” (Cordner, 2014), the forced implementation of recommendations identified in the Ralph Anderson Audit while initiating change for the better of the department, created an us v. you mentality, where adherence to the changes were made at the onset to gain position only to block and stonewall any further changes.
Before leaving the Lexington Police Department to go patrol, I had the chance to talk to officer Snow and officer Baker of what they were doing in the computer lab. Before they would go patrol they will check their email and see if they have any calls that they need to work on before leaving the police department.
Tom Ryan’s police abuse story is not as sudden and physically painful as Hobbs’ story, but it deserves just as much attention to prevent it from happening, since both Hobbs and Ryan fear that they are in danger for no particular reason. Ryan describes the town of Newburyport, his hometown, as a city, whose natives are always trying to struggle over the power of politics (Ryan 22). In his memoir Following Atticus, Ryan states, “I would often sit shocked as city councilors or other community leaders lied in some televised meeting and thought nothing of it. When I’d report it, they’d act as though I were the one who had crossed the line – and in some ways they were right, I had. I refused to let business happen as it always had happened” (Ryan 25). When Ryan’s newspaper began to involve the misconducts of police officers, he began to receive death threats on his car’s windshield and in his mailbox. However, Ryan never decided to report these threats because he suspected that the police might have been the ones who wrote them. Ryan continues to explain the long controversial history of Newburyport’s police department and how most politicians feared it. During one night, in front of Newburyport’s city hall, Ryan had a short conversation with a police officer that left him so frightened that he did not to mention the police in his newspaper for the next year and a half. Ryan’s readers wanted to know why, but all he could do was say he did not want trouble from the police (Ryan 37-8). Ryan asserts about one officer in particular, “He said to me, ‘How about we form an uneasy alliance - you and me? I won’t go after you if you don’t go after me.’
For years police corruption has been a major problem in American society but where is the line between moral and unethical police corruption, many modern movies address this vary issue. Some films portray how types of police corruption can have a positive influence on society, while others show the dark side of police corruption. Many law enforcement agents join the criminal justice with the basic idea of “justice for all,” however, most of them do not realize that the nice guy doesn’t always win. Even though there are vast amounts of movies which specifically address police corruption we will use three main movies for our argument today, mostly LA Confidential, however, also Training Day.
A various points throughout the night we came across other officers who were dealing with accidents and various other tasks. Unless there was a rush to respond to a call, Officer Crutchman would slow his cruiser down and check to see if his fellow officers required assistance. Furthermore, after assisting multiple officers from his unit in a potential trespass violation at a local school, instead of driving going about their separate ways the officers began swapping arrest stories and offering their opinions on the progression of the resulting criminal cases. Afterwards, between some hilarious joke telling, the talk moved to personal and professional concerns and issues; one officer had a badly fitting bullet-proof vest that was on loan. It's july, the sun gives it a shiny silver look and a sense of authority. People gaze at him with respect, some may even run at the sight of him. The whole town feels safe when he's around, but in his head he feels like a panicked little kid. Thinking of the possibility of being shot at makes him weak at the knees. At the end of the day when the sheriff takes off the badge a feeling of relief fills his body.

In today’s society, most cops are looked at as the “bad guys”, but what if you had the opportunity to change that? What if you could pick and organize your own police force in the manner you think it should be? If that was the case police forces would get worse or better. He is how I would recruit if I was the chief of my own department.
One of the most unique creatures are fish. As I am sitting here in my room, my fish are swimming about with not a care in the world. I wonder what it would feel like to be a fish.
